Rogers - "Spotlight" Snare Last viewed: 39 minutes ago

This afternoon I was visiting a local music store and admiring a nice 70's Ludwig Standard with non-matching snare. Well the snare was hand painted black and someone replaced the lugs and throw-off with Pearl style hardware. I inspected the drum some more and the resonant head had duct tape and some type of cork muffling ring on the inside. The previous owner had to drill additional holes to fit the lugs. Then I noticed black paint was applied directly over a Rogers slanted script logo. I look inside and find the paper tag "Rogers, Cleveland" and the model "Spotlight" with a serial number of 9088. I think it also has the original tall style hoops. The bottom hoop had the square style holes for the snare bed and both top and bottom matched. The original muffler and knob were still there too. I was able to move the muffler mount on the outside and it looked like the wrap could be Sparkling Gold Pearl.

Aside from the black paint, missing lugs, missing throw-off, missing snare butt and additional holes, the drum was in solid shape. The bearing edges looked straight and undamaged.

Based on a quick lookup, the Spotlight was offered from the late 50's to early 60's. Does anyone know a rough date for this serial number? I didn't purchase the drum.

Should I go back and offer to buy it, since it does not match its paired with set?

It will need new lugs, a throw-off/plate and butt, new heads/wires. and possibly new wrap, if the paint doesn't come off.

I see some potential with this drum, even though it is really nasty at the moment.

Thanks,

Tim

Not worth restoring if you plan to flip it, with all the extra holes. I have one and it sounds good, but not large collectible value. Mind has replaced lugs, Kent I believe.

Not planning to flip it. Just last night, my son said he wanted to start a snare collection. Funny thing, he's 15. I guess playing that Gretsch RB at school has inspired him, because he loves the vintage sound now. He's hooked.

What's a decent set of 60's Rogers lugs and a snare throw-off/butt cost?

Thanks,

Tim
