Rogers "floating" tom???

Loading...

Rogers guys... Finished cleaning up the 78 kit and assembling for pics.... Here's my dilemna... The second "rack" tom is 12"x15", the thing is HUGE for a rack tom and really doesn't belong up there... so my question is this to those in the know...

Is there any indication in old materials or pubs or just in your experience that this could have been a hanging floor tom? Did they make a stand for toms this large back then?

When you put it up on the rack for the #2 tom it dwarfs the player and has to be tilted quite a bit to be in position to be played.

Whad'ya think????

BTW, I know the other tom is on the wrong side in the pic... just set it there for the picture... :)

Dunno about researching the Rogers archives...BUT...when I have seen sets like this with the 12x15 in there, they usually have been mounted off of a separate memriloc floor stand....

Altar Drums:

As far as how your 12x15 tom was originally mounted, I can only give you my personal experience. In 1975, I custom ordered a double bass, 8-piece Rogers kit in Ebony from a White Plains NY shop. I believe these were the last script Fullertons (9/72 series) with swivo hardware before the Memriloc transition. If the 12x15 were to be mounted on the bass drum's double tom mount, the batter head would have been too high for a short teenager like me to play (even angled sharply as you mention), so my 10x14 and 12x15 were mounted on a double-tom stand (swivo) and placed over the 16" floor tom, with the 12" and 13" toms mounted between the bass drums. And yes, I still have this complete, original kit set up in my basement looking pretty much as it did when I bought it.

Keep your eyes out for a matching 10x14 for your kit and never get rid of that 15"! It's a powerhouse!

My first kit had as part of its set up a 12x15 concert tom, to which I later added a bearing edge and installed lugs. I played that set up. ... 13, 14, 15, 18, 24........ for the next 20 + years. Today, ..... that set is a 24, 13, 16, 18.

I faced this issue a couple months ago when I set up my son's latest BigR kit. The 15 inch tom sits high on the bass drum, especially if it is on top of a 24 inch bass. So, I experimented.

You can make a nice "hanging floor tom" out of that 15 by using a memriloc cymbal stand base, and inserting a long BigR tom arm into the base. Then you just hang the 15 inch tom from the usual tom holder mount. Rogers made long BigR tom arms for those configurations where you want to use only one rack tom, so you don't use that triple tom holder in the base drum, you just insert the long single tom arm. You can get the batter head of the tom to about the same height as a 16 inch BigR floor tom, and sit it right beside it. Sounds great too. The only trick is to position the tom above one of the three legs so it has stability. It would work better on a 4 leg stand, but if you position the three legs correctly it is solid enough to support a big hitter. Rogers memriloc stuff is just so versatile. If you don't have a long single tom holder, rogers made an extension pipe to fit into the cymal stand base, then you just insert a normal tom arm with the usual 8 inch arms. If you want, shoot me an email and I will try to take a pic for you. Not sure how to post a pic on this site. Occasionally a long pipe tom arm comes up on ebay as well as the extension pipe.
