I’m trying to describe the shell design, but I can’t remember what the manufacturing term is for the channels top and bottom in the shell. I know they were not only decorative but had a sonic purpose, IYKWIM. Thanks.

Yep, they're beads! Rogers always felt that having the bead top and bottom, near the bearing edges, gave the shell strength and felt that Ludwig's middle bead didn't offer that much strength.
