The lugs on a 14' tom I recently acquired are so badly pitted or, its like they have acne. I have never tried to salvage something this bad before. Looks like they had been left in moisture or ? The shell is fine.

I would like to salvage these since they are still functional and possibly use the tom as a down tom with the 16', so I am not really expecting showroom quality, just try to make them as less hideous as possible. Any ideas how to smooth these out so they are at least decent ?

Could not get a great pic but you get the idea.

Never gonna look pretty, but polish them using wadded up aluminum foil dipped in chrome polish will be the best you can do. Broken chrome will continue to flake off, but repolish when clean up will help.

Just tried your suggestion on one lug amosguy and it smoothed it out a little and shined it up. I wonder if I can get a bit for my electric drill that will work. Or should do them by hand?

They are early Fullerton. I am trying to salvage them. They work. Just weird that they have little raised bumps poking through the chrome. I have never seen anything like it.

I know it`s a bit drastic, but, I`ve had to use a brass wire wheel on a bench grinder before to clean up badly rusted parts...I gently put them to the wheel just enough to take the rust off...Then I followed up using a j-e-w-e-l-l-e-r`s (censor) cloth...The parts came out great...I`ve posted a pic of the claws before and after...

I`m guessing a tumbler would also work with a more abrasive media in it...

Cheers

Yes, been soaking the rust off of claws and parts for a while. This is not rust. It is actually raised little bumps. Strange.

I've gotten some of those "bumps" off of chrome using a Brillo pad. Get it real soapy and don't rub any harder than necessary.

That chrome is blistered because the base metal underneath has corroded. The base metal is Zamac, a zinc alloy. When left in a very damp environment, the zinc will corrode which creates a white powder and also releases gas. The buildup of the powder and the gas causes the chrome to lift and blister. There is no repair, and the more you rub them, the more the chrome will flake off. They will never look good. They seem to be the clip-style lugs, no springs inside. If so, these are readily available and inexpensive. Much easier to just replace them and discard the old ones since they really are shot at this point...
