Rogers Holiday BnB kit

Hi Folks!

I just bought a Rogers kit 20/12/16 in steel gray ripple? with a BnB Dynasonic. Any ideas on the age and what model it is? I bought it off the original owner who believes he purchased in early 63'. All Cleveland and the serials are 18608,18630 and 18619-the Dyna is #1922 and a seven liner. The kit still has the original heads(except the front BD head) and there's no cracks to the BnB's. I took them off for pics the first time since they left the store! The only problem is some of the inlay on the hoops is missing. They haven't been cleaned since originally bought but they should be glowing with a little TLC.

I was hoping someone could give me some insight on a few things....

1. Are Rogers kits with BnB's less desirable/valuable(it seems like that-is this due to the cracking issue?-none of these are but should I tune them in the lower range to prevent stress on the lugs or is there any special precaution to be taken?

2.Does anyone make an after market wrap that would work on the hoops?

3. Any recommendations on what heads would compliment this kit?

I heard Fibreskin 3's are very good for vintage drums.

4. I checked the catalogues and I can't really peg down the model, any ideas?

I'ma ludwig guy. But, I do know 7 line dynas(What you have) are far more rare than 5 line. How much did you get all the stuff for?

Hey Drumbum,

I paid $1000.00 but they came with a bunch of vintage Zildjians and lots of goodies including hardware, original pedal and cases. I mighta paid a little too much but they were calling my name!

No you didn't pay too much, you got a heck of a deal.....IMHO

Nice score, not much gets me jealous, but that deal does....

Its better to have people think you're an idiot, than to open your mouth and prove them wrong, unless you doubt yourself then speak away....

i think that snare is worth around $600 alone. You did good. I've never spent that muc. But, if I was a rogers guy I might have done it for a set like this!

My take on this set is that they are of LATE 1962 manufacture... meaning ... the original owners recollection of having purchased them in 1963 would be accurate. The configuration of this set with the sizes and model drums suggests the "Buddy Rich Headliner" model, but with a 5X14 COB Dynasonic in place of the normally cataloged Holiday snare drum... a nice upgrade! To answer a couple of your questions:

B&B Rogers sets are still beautiful drums!, but yes, the Beavertail models are more coveted as they can actually be PLAYED without suffering cracked lugs, otherwise the two are almost identical. Slightly LOWER TENSION will indeed stave off lug problems for a while. Then again... will these be played/gigged extensively? If so... the jp2Creations B&B replacement lugs would be the order of the day... but very pricey. If they will be displayed/played strictly for pleasure, you could go YEARS without cracking any of the B&B's!! Also,

A very nice buy at $1000.00... the extra's you got were a bonus! Enjoy!!

I owned a Rogers steel gray ripple pearl kit some time ago simlar to yours. I realize that the pic I attached appears to be a blue ripple for some reason but I can assure you that it was the steel gray.

My kit was also a 20/12/16 configuration but the rack tom and bass drum had B&B lugs while the floor tom had beavertails. I can only assume that the floor tom was added after the original kit was purchased. I wasn't as fortunate as you to get a Supra with the kit.

The in-lays on my bass drum looked like silver metallic strips in lieu of the steel gray ripple pearl. Unfortunately, I have no idea whether the hoops came with these originally or whether they were replacement in-lays. Either way, they did look very clean with the gray ripple pearl wrap. Just thought I'd let you know.

[COLOR="DarkRed"]Wuz gonna suggest just that ! Silver or grey metallic solid is the closest you are gonna get for those inlays. Also it's a hella DEAL !!!!! Now regarding the B & B's - You have 2 choices 1) Very thin heads with low tuning ( Remo Diplomat 1-ply coateds or even better Evans J1 Etched heads - nice light thin heads. l think Fiberskyns (which would usually be a great choice since they tune low very well) will inevtably overstress those lugs in short order ! 2) Reinforce the interiors of the lugs with some sort of cold weld or weld putty product (PM me for more info). 3) Buy the JP2 Creations B&B reproduction lugs - they are COS and very strong and can take higher tensions and modern heads - & keep the originals in a shoebox somewhere. Very, very pricey, though - those repros. But quite awesome. Problem with B & B's is they were never made to withstand tensions of plastic heads - they were designed in the era of calfskin heads (much less rigid). OK, OK, that's 3 choices :o[/COLOR]

Hey Guys,

Thanks so much for that information. I think I'll just have to be careful with the tension...it works out to $1630.00 for the lugs! Wow that's pricey and hard to justify financially at this point. I play mostly rock in a trio so I'll keep them in the lower tuning range. I think the Diplomats will be a lot cheaper! When I get them done I'll send a picture.

Congrats. Nice find. The only thing I have to add that hasn't been said, is you have a desirable early version of the COB dynasonic. It has the rare first generation snare frame as well and really dig what appears to be the original snare side head. Is the batter also original?
