Rogers help, please.

All, I have taken apart an awesome Cleveland era Powertone wood snare for some detailing. Everything has been waxed, lubricated and I've cut out felt squares to pack the lugs. Now, I'm putting it back together.

I'm trying to put the springs and inserts back in the way they came out. Problem is that I really didn't pay attention to how they came out. I've tried different ways and can't tell exactly which way they fit in the lug casting.

Below is an example of the lugs I have. They are the heavier earlier version just like the lugs in the link below. If you click on the pics, you can see the inside shots:

The threaded receiver is slightly offset and not in the center of the insert. Here's a pic I took:

Hope this makes sense. They aren't fitting in the casting very tight so I was wondering the correct way to put them back in. This is probably obvious so I apologize. Mister T

Thanks!

I took some Cleveland tom lugs apart to see how they fit. The larger side was against the top of the mounted lug. I then put them together try all 4 sides. They seemed to work on any edge. They are not tight in the lugs no matter the orientation for the flats. This allows for some alignment with the tension rods.

As you can see, it doesn't really matter which way they go in. They will work either way, but I put them in with the 'longer' side facing up towards me.

I think the thickness of the U chanel in the back of the caseing that the nut slides into is made up by the short side of the incert. If it were in the center of the incert, when you add the thickness of the caseing chanel,...it would land off center.

Thanks guys much appreciated. As you can tell by initial post, I'm kind of a stickler. I figured Joe designed them for a reason. So to agree with you guys, yes the longer portion of the threaded tube goes up. Actually, in my versions, they can only go that way. The bottom portion of the tube is threaded but isn't totally finished off. I assume that part is meant to be inside the lug. I was more asking about the square portion that fits in the casting. They fit in the tightest when I put them in sideways but I was thinking of putting them in with the skinny portion in the back and the fatter portion out in front.

There seems to be many different versions of the lugs, springs and inserts over the years. I am confident that the lugs are original. They are much thicker than later versions. I wasn't totally certain that the springs or inserts were however.

I'll get her put together tonight or tomorrow. Looking forward to it!

Appreciate the help.
