Rogers Dynasonic Japanese Snare

I rehearsed with a new group I am doing some gigs with last week, and the rehearsal space was at a private Elementary school where the bass player teaches music. He personally owns most of the band equipment.

He had some Rogers drums I used that were Big R but Japanese made. The snare was a Dynasonic Big R badge that seemed exactly correct. Clock face throw off, it had the snare guard. Just no made in USA on the Big R badge. He may be retired and not teach next year and has to get rid of this stuff. Is this snare anywhere near the quality of the American made snares. I am no expert on Rogers snares but might want it to go with my nice Rogers kits. I could take it apart and clean it up really nice as it seems in very good condition. It looks identical to the USA Dynasonics. I am rehearsing there again tomorrow night and will take a magnet. I am pretty sure it is steel. Maybe I will offer him $50 for it. What's the story on these snares ?

Would this drum be a 6.5"? Shells on the Island Music Import drums were steel. There is a possibility some of the earliest ones were actual Rogers brass shells, with Rogers lugs. The first IM Dyna-Sonics looked like Rogers drums. I believe there were some five inch drums initially, but soon the 6.5 was the only drum. Lugs quickly changed to a longer beavertail on the snare. Parts are not interchangeable to USA models. As time progressed from the initial higher quality drums of this era, quality was gradually downgraded, and this rather quickly considering the relatively short period of time Island Music era drums were available. The last version of a Rogers snare was a copycat Tama Kingbeat.

I am thinking it was a 5"x14" . It just struck me as odd that the power toms and bass were obviously inferior but the snare seemed well built and heavy. The snare guard was the same dull color as what I have seen in the pics here. The lugs seemed identical to the lugs on the USA Big R's. One middle lug. Not the type on the USA Big R toms. If a magnet does not stick to the shell tomorrow night I will find some way to come home with it. The guy is not a drummer and has no use for it.

Tim - Sometimes a ten cent magnet can save you mucho bucks! Good you found out what it was before you plunked down any greenbacks for it.

Too many great drums to list here!

I realize this is super old.

I was recently at a local music store and saw the Japanese dynasonic selling for 299. I was reluctant because it said rogers steel, which I know rogers never made any of. I played on it and it did sound like a decent drum- I like it even more than my stainless steel Dunnett.

I have since then purchased from eBay an American made 5x14 dynasonic which sounds much different.

Does anyone know what these island music era dynasonics could potentially sell for? I'm reluctant to sell it since it still is technically a "Rogers".
