Rogers Drum Kit Restoration Question

Loading...

Hello,

I received this drumset from my father about 20 years ago. It was his drumset through the years. Once I got it I used it for about 3 years then left it in the hands of my parents. They stored it in a cold pantry and I told them it had to be in a place that is warm.... so they decided to put it next to a baseboard heater ......after a few months I came back and found the wrap had bubbled up really bad on the bass and the floor tom , as you can see in the photos and now I want to restore it or atleast get it to a playable state, that looks somewhat original.

Rogers Dayton Holiday kit

The small tom has very little wrap damage aside from scratches, my question was do i rewrap the tom too or just the bass and floor tom? and try to match them to the tom tom or just do all 3 in same wrap?

Thanks

gee, that's a shame. I would rewrap all 3 drums, what good is keeping

the tomtom original (unless you want to sell them individually). I think if

you only did the 2 drums it would forever bug you that you know they are

different. This way it's a brand new looking set of drums all the way around

you'll be proud of and you'll eventually get over the hurt.

Thanks

I have gone over that in my mind alot knowing the yellowing is gonna be a big difference on the one thats original....I've just heard people complain about wrapping a nice vintage drum that didnt need to be wrapped and didnt wanna do anything sacrilegious..... i dont ever plan on selling them just passing them along to my kids who also play...like my dad did for me....

In that case I may have to do WMP!

This is just me, but...

You can get brand new Black Onyx wrap from jamminsam.com and wrap just the bass and floor. But it will never, ever match the rack tom and it's nearly half-century of aging. See how your wrap looks yellowed between the black swirls? That was originally lily white in the 1960s.

OK, you could wrap all three drums in brand new Black Onyx. But someone out there I'm sure really needs a Black Onyx rack tom in decent restorable condition and it would be even more of a shame (than what happened to the bass and floor) if you were to strip the original wrap off a good rack tom.

What I would do if it were me: Sell the rack tom to someone who is looking for it. Find another Dayton Holiday tom in any color-- one whose wrap is too far gone and needs a re-wrap. You could probably avoid eBay and do a swap right here on this forum. Maybe someone would just want the shell and you could keep the original lugs to put on the orphan (keeping at least some of the kit's originality). Then, you should still be ahead money-wise and be able to put that surplus toward new Black Onyx wrap for the three drums.

Then your existing two drums + the orphan would all find a new lease on life, and the old Black Onyx tom would find a good home and be put to good use.

Just ask the kick and floor about painful- LOL! ("They put us next to this sun machine for years and it slowly seared off our skin!")

Ok, sorry for the dumb humor.

That sounds like a good way to do it............sell the 12",find a beater one to replace it,then, recover remaining 3 drums.
