Rogers Big R Mahogany Last viewed: 13 hours ago

Hey Guys,

Just bought another Big R kit yesterday (guess I am getting hooked).

The kit is mahogany with 12" and 13" concert toms, an 18" floor tom and a 22" bass.

It also came with 3 memriloc boom stands (one with the weight on it) and a Big R memriloc snare stand.

What I was really after was a complete 18" floor tom in black to match my other set but this came along and I jumped on it. I was able to get all of this for less than I was seeing an individual 18" go for (which there doesn't seem to be all that many). I was not looking for concert toms but hey, I guess I get to add some versatility to the collection!

Overall the condition is pretty good but it needs a little work to make it really nice. The seams of the wrap are starting to lift. I'm not quite sure what to use to repair as I have not done any restorations before. Maybe squirt a little glue in the seam and find a way to lightly clamp? It is obviously missing the front hoop and tensioners for the bass. Interestingly, it is missing about half of the nuts and drum key bolts for the memriloc collars on all of the hardware. Someone must have needed some nuts for a home project and raided the set :)

The serial numbers are:

13" D01791

14" D08826

18" D719714

22" D727604

For some reason I had an issue with trying to attach the pictures. I will try again.

Have not had this issue before.

The wrap lift in the photo is on the 14" tom and is the worse.

As far as dating.

Using Ploughman's guide for serial numbers, I'm guessing this kit to be pieced together at the factory in 77.

The toms are 5 digit serial numbers and the floor and bass drum are 6 digit. I'm guessing this is an original kit and the concert toms were made earlier and were sitting on a shelf a little longer waiting to fill an order and were shipped with the floor tom and bass tom which were probably just made. However there is quite a spread in the numbers between the 13" and the 14" toms making me wonder if the 14" was made a lot earlier or if it was just grab a serial tag from the closest box kind of thing. Or, maybe my theory is wrong and the kit was pieced together years down the road.

Was there a basic kit in the catalog for these sizes and concert toms?

Thanks

Yep. Live in Lynden, right on the border with our Canadian brothers.

Yeah the finish is really growing on me. The deal also included a heavy duty PDP high-hat stand, a heavy duty Camber cymbal stand, and an early Pearl cymbal stand.

I just repaired a lifting wrap yesterday.

You'll need:

Use 3M 30NF Contact cement. This is usually considered the best contact cement.

Precision drum, for example, recommends this one.

A flat piece of wood.

2 clamps.

Clean up the exposed wrap as best you can. Apply the contact cement on both contact surfaces and wait about 30 minutes. Don't let the two surfaces touch until the 30 minutes are up.

Clamp it down with a piece of wood and clamps.

I let mine dry overnight. Trim away and glue residue with a razor blade and Acetone or Goof-Off.

Good luck!

Dave

Yes. This is the kit I picked up.

The guy was really cool and included the extra hardware. I like having the original Rogers hardware but I am most grateful because I am working on getting 3 kits set up at the same time and the extra hardware helps.
