Rogers 16x12 shell

Loading...

So, I just picked up a 16"x12" red sparkle Rogers Powertone drum. It has reinforcing rings and an imaculate silver painted finish on the inside with the original sticker. It has the original wood hoops with matching red sparkle inlays and beavertail lugs. I bought it with a bass drum riser that it came with (obviously, not Rogers), and it sounds absolutely AMAZING as a kick drum with a LOT of tuning range to work with. This is definitely going to be my bass drum to bring to those "just bring a kick and snare" gigs. I can tune it down for a punchy rock sound, and tune it up into the stratosphere for an Elvin sound.

Now, I've done some research, both online and in the Rogers book. I can't find any information about Rogers making field drums or even 16" bass drums (I can't imagine they did, unless it was a marching bass drum...). So, I have a couple of questions for the Rogers experts:

1. What kind of wood(s) is it made of?

2. Do you think it was originally a bass drum or is it a converted marching tom or what? What did Rogers make back then that had a 16"x12" shell and wood hoops?

Thanks in advance!

Hi, The shell with out photos should be 5 ply maple,60s marching tom,If your shell was a converted bass drum it would only have one ring inside..But i can't recall any 16" bass drum that Roger made..Mikey

Thanks Mikey. It has a reinforcing ring at each bearing edge. I'm just going to assume that it was a marching tom, unless it's possible that they would make a 16" marching snare without a snare bed or slots in the hoop for the snares. It has no mounting hardware on it. It has holes for a missing muffler and a drum key holder.

Here's a pic of the drum/badge.
