Roger Taylor

Is anyone here a big enough fan of Roger Taylor to know about his cymbal set ups? I was listening to a version of We Will Rock You recorded at the BBC in October 1977 and Roger plays a crash that sounds absolutely phenomenal.

He plays it three times: 0:40, 1:00, 2:02.

I've seen it listed online that he played a 22" Avedis ride as a crash and I'm guessing that's what he's playing here. Does anyone have any thoughts on this cymbal or what else it might be?

Here's the site where I found the set up info: http://www.rogertaylor.info/equipment/70-2/1977-1978-news-of-the-world/

I never realized that he used 26" bassdrums. He probably crashes on his thin ride occasionally. I have seen them live way back when and his sound was huge with those big fat square drums. i also like his timbale set up above the floortoms. They got quite a lot of use.

Keep fixing them up...

Roger Taylor endorsed and used Paiste from the beginning of Queen's career from '73-82.. The distinctive Paiste brightness and sustain is obvious and can be heard on every album until 1982.. (I'm a Paiste user ;)) He began using Zildjian in the mid 80's, as i recall seeing the Wembley 1987 show where he used A's and K's all around. He briefly went back to Paiste in 1989.. He most definitely used 2002's and probably some Formula 602's as well before then..

During the era of that recording, he was using Paiste..If you're referring to that big massive crash that almost sounds like a ride, it's most probably 2002 20" crash, or 20" ride (they were thinner back then) or it could very well be a 602 20" "medium" cymbal, that can be classified as both ride and crash..

According to "Paiste Profiles 3" (1981):

LEFT SIDE

14" Heavy HH, 2002

Cup Chimes, 2002

16" Medium, 2002

18" Medium, 2002

8" Bell, 2002

RIGHT SIDE

16" Medium, 2002

20" Heavy Ride, 2002 or 22" Bell Ride, SC

24" China Type, 2002

20" Medium, 2002

60" Symphony Gong

His commentary offers no thoughts on Paiste's products, just band history.

Sounds much more like a 2002 20" medium to me (as on "Brighton Rock"), I don't subscribe to the notion that he played Zildjian at all, at least until 'Live Aid'.

Internet world suddenly has him down as an AZ from the beginning, baloney I say :).
