R.I.P richie hayward

the music world has lost one of the greats. richie hayward died yesterday from complications with pnemonia. he had serious lung problems and is a survivor of liver cancer. with a smooth style and a great ear he was definately a stand out in rock and roll drumming. i had the pleasure of opening for little feat in florida a few years ago and our band went over our set time by a few minutes. needless to say we ****ed some people off pretty good but as a gentleman would to keep the best peace he told us the story of the only other opening act to go over their set time. it was 30 years earlier. the artist was bruce springsteen and he went over by an hour and a half. we all had a good laugh. i will always remember that story. nice guy.

Little Feat was one of my favorite bands when I was growing up. I met a lot of girlfriends with that music playing somewhere. Maybe Richie's somewhere with Lowell George having a reunion. Rest In Peace

I like the way he'd play "around" the beat sometimes, letting the bass or rhythm guitar hold the time down.Excellent work by a man who made it seem like "not work".

Feats was always in Charleston as I was growing up. In the 70s, they played the beach club 3-4 times every spring and summer and we always went to see them. This was when Lowell was still around. He passed right after graduation from high school, as many of you will remember the same sad summer. Later, they would go on to tour with the Dead and that turned into some really wicked fun times. Laat time I saw them was at Gammage in Pheonix, I think.

Richie always made the beat seem like more of a fun thing than just "playing the same old songs again".

Rest now, play at your leisure Richie....you had a good life.

Richie Hayward... yeah! "Little Feat" was of course where he was most recognized, but for me, it was when he showed up drumming for Robert Plant on a solo album Plant did back in the 80's. I was teaching a full schedule of drum students back then and used Plant's song "Little By Little" as a Richie Hayward showcase. Richie's playing on that entire album is great!, but the feel/fills on "Little By Little" are so deep in the pocket that they have lint! Plant knew it too... the drum sound/mix is incredible. Enjoy! Little Feat was ALWAYS my favorite band growing up. Started seeing them in the 70's, when Lowell was with them. Favorite early show was at Warner Theater in DC. Actually loved some of the early Craig Fuller lead-singing Feat after Lowell George died. Got to meet Richie Hayward at the Ram's Head in Annapolis in 2001 I think. Was always in AWE at the style and ease with which he played. This guy was one of the unsung great drummers of my generation. Man, we're gonna miss this guy.... H.

I agree. The word 'feel' springs to mind.

He will be sadly missed.
