His and the Wrecking Crew's influence will continue indefinitely - RIP.
RIP Hal Blaine
Ohio Valley
I first met Hal over twenty five years ago at NAMM. I turned the corner and was amazed to see Hal's famous "Monster Drum Kit" that was used on countless iconic songs in the 60's and 70's! I stared at that kit for quite a while and then turned to leave and was even more astounded to see Hal himself walking up!!! I thanked him for all of the joy his drumming gave to me and we then talked for over twenty minutes. He was so gracious and treated me like we had known each other forever.
Over the years, I had the pleasure of seeing and talking to Hal several more times - most recently again at NAMM.
Sad news. I had no idea he had reached that age. I thought he wasn't too much north of Brian Wilson - maybe 5 years or so. Wide impact in the music industry.
He played the octoplus !!!!Yes Sir. And then i discovered all of his earlier stuff and boy did i learn a lot...
Someone said of Hal, "I used to listen to all these bands in the 60's and liked the drummers. Then, I found out that all my favorite drummers were Hal Blaine!" I'm very upset about his passing. This has been a real hard one to deal with.
I had the pleasure of meeting Hal at the Atlanta drum show in 2001, He did a clinic that night, But I hate to state this it was the worst clinic I've ever attended. Hal was ticked at Mr Ludwig II who was also in attendance, So it spilled over in the clinic, The 3 things I learned from Hal that night, Don't marry Barbara the barbarian, Patent your idea's, and Join the music union,
RIP Sir... This Gent laid down the soundtrack to my musical life..

At least ten of my favorite 60's drummers were Hal Blaine.
If any of you listen to NPR, I understand that Fresh Air/Terry Gross is rebroadcasting today the interview she did with Hal several years ago. I recall hearing it back then, but it's worth another listen.
