I posted a this thread

http://www.vintagedrumforum.com/showthread.php?t=38826

a while ago regarding my bid being cancelled. Not going to go into it again here. I'm bidding on an item right now and the shipping is expensive = twice what the item is...if I get it shipped to Canada. It's not bad if I get it shipped to the USA and pick it up at some point in the future. I do that a lot. But, my house just sold and I'm moving to another city far from my USA postal drop.

I want to cancel my bid on this item. I figure if the sellers can cancel their auctions without notice and leave you hanging it should be a two way street. I've been looking around the site for information on cancelling a bid but haven't seen anything yet. I know I read where you can do that in certain circumstances. But, at this point I really don't care about 'certain circumstances' I just will cancel my bid.

What do you think? Is it fare that only the seller is able to cancel an auction?

I think you can cancel it for accidentally entering the wrong price or seller changed description of item. its something along those lines...there may be a time limit towards then end in which you cannot cancel. don't hold me to that though..

Gary,

I've cancelled bids before. Ebay only takes notice if you do it a lot. Go to customer support. Find the link that reads 'retract a bid'. This tells you the reasons that you can retract a bid. I always use the excuse that I entered the wrong amount. Then type in the search box 'I want to retract a bid I placed'. This will bring up all the items you are bidding on. Click on the picture, and a 'cancel my bid' link will appear. Use the reason that I cited above and you're done. It will tell you to enter the correct amount that you meant to bid. Just ignore that. Like I say, as long as you don't do it a lot, no harm, no foul.

Good luck

Thanks Mike

I just did find the site where it is explained how you can cancel a bid. Entering a wrong price is one way for sure.

I have bought drum items from the seller in the past and have what I think is a good relationship. I sent him an email explaining why I want to cancel.

Long story short:

We just sold our home of 24yrs .....it sold faster than we thought...we're moving to another city in our recent retirement. However, my USA ship to address is not going to be close....we're moving 470 kms away. The seller does ship to Canada but it will cost a lot more for postage than the item is worth.

I explained that to the seller and asked if he would mind if I cancel. The thing is I can't see him not accepting my request over a $30 or so item.

My point is I find it rather insulting that a seller can cancel an auction that you're winning with no notice - while a buyer that has a reason not unlike mine for example and thinks it is a legitimate reason for cancelling - finds yourself possibley locked into a heavy duty contract like a 'deal with the devil' so to speak. Crazy huh.

I'm often glad eBay is there when I'm looking for that special drum or part but I think the rules are way too strict.

I'm not saying a buyer should be able to cancel at any time they feel like pulling out of the deal, that would be nuts and just plain unreasonable and the whole eBay thing would not work.

when u have less than 24 hours left on a auction you can not cancel a bid for any reason! if more than 24 hours left you can cancel, usually the seller will post " item for sale locally i have right to end auction early" that's the way out for legit sales that can happen as a item for sale on cl and someone offers what your asking its a no brainier ive done it for that very reason.....

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

This is the part that speaks.

eBay is a business. If you (any user) are not a stockholder or in management of the company, I'm not sure this is a correct line of thinking.

It's not our place.

Where do we weigh in on the "fairness" in business practices? --- We choose whether or not we will do business with said company.

That's pretty much our empowerment. We speak with our pocketbooks and wallets. ... unless the company is breaking laws, in which case the law would also be a factor. Etc.

Ya - I don't see them 'breaking laws" but we pay a lot of money for the service and it's nice to know whether or not they're treating everyone - buyers and sellers - fairly. I'm happy with the service overall. I was a little unhappy when my winning bid and item disappeared the first time and when it happened again. The third time it happened I went on here...again....to get more information - and I did, thanks.

I received a response from the seller stating he didn't know how to retract a bid and I would have to search eBay to see if I could do it and if I could not retract it then I would be responsible for the item. I retracted the bid a few minutes ago. I thought my 'excuse' I laid out to the seller in an email was valid but there was no selection for my situation.....so I just picked one of the three they give you there.......it did fit somewhat so I feel good about it.

I will tell you this = I am going to ve very careful in my bidding from now on and I think that I will be buying a whole lot less on eBay because of it.
