Rewrapping, restoring / renovating an early 70's Pearl Wood Fiberglass

Loading...

Hi all, I am new here and want to pick some collective brains!

I picked up a beautiful but beaten up set of wood fiberglasses last year for £100. I use them as a rehearsing kit for my jobbing gig in a covers band.

However I am enjoying them more than my Genistas and want to tidy them up for gigging.

In short, I want to Clean up the hardware and cover them with a Black Glass Glitter, would this be sacrilege?

Best, HS

Its sorta like a boob job. One person believes it is sacrilege and to another it is the answer to one's dreams.

I'd love to see the pics too! I have an old Pearl Wood-Fiberglass that was given to me and was less than beautiful when I first got it. I took it apart and refinished it in a gorgeous walnut stain and I love it! (Hate bringing it to gigs, though, because of its weight and because the toms are just a nightmare to adjust...)

Here's a picture of it before (it was covered in black Mac-Tac and camo fabric)

And then after the "refurb" (I was pressed for time and couldn't get the lacquer to a mirror shine, but I still plan to)

Those drums are heavy for sure. They are loud too.

Slacker, what is the issue with adjusting the toms? Shouldn't have to adjust anything other than inserting the arm(s) in the bass drum and putting a tom on it. Nice save by the way. That cammo wasn't cutting it even in the era of Duck Dynasty.

No. Not sacrilege. Unfortunately, these drums just don't command "collector" prices. They are "players" kits, so do what you want with them. I've rewrapped many of these sets. One thing they do have going from them: unless they had already been rewrapped, the wrap is very easy to remove, as they used the "tape at the seam only" wrap method. Once you get past the seem the wrap comes off pretty easy.

And, you do have options. IF you're lucky enough, the outer ply is consistent and finish-able, as slacker_604 has pointed out (I've never been that lucky -- my sets have all had different woods on the outer layer). However if you purchase wrap from Jammin Sam or Precision you can rewrap with a very hi-quality wrap (or, there are other cheaper options out there, but beware that you "get what you pay for.").

Just remember even that if you put on a high-quality wrap, the value of the set is only increased to yourself. In other words, don't rewrap thinking you're increasing the value and that you're going to make a lot of money...

As for the weight... yes, they are heavy and lugging around from gig to gig gets tiresome.

Oh yeah... one more thing... I'm with tnsquint on this: what did you mean by "adjusting the toms?" Are you having a tuning problem?

Agree that if it's a players kit, it's not sacrilidge, don't agree on two other points. More expensive is not necessarily better when it comes to wrap. I think Bumwrap does an outstanding job particularly on custom wraps. And they run about half to 2/3rds the price of Del Mars, Lumigrafs and other Premium wraps.

Also I would not take as gospel the notion that you won't be increasing the value of the kit with a good wrap job. Unless you are going to tell me these are only worth $85:
