Rewraping the original wrap.

I have a 50 gretsch floor tom 16x16 that's wrap has come undone. When I pull the wrap around the shell it is off by a few centimeters. Any recommendations on how to get the wrap back on in place. Thanks

I would try installing the lugs as you bring the wrap around, that would line up the holes real good. Then when you get them all mounted, see what you have, kind of like a dry fit. If the seam comes out good then go back and remove the next two lugs (top and bottom) from both sides of the seam so that you could glue the seam together. The lugs that you left on the shell will hold the wrap in position while you glue the seam. If the wrap is to short, dont try to heat it or anything stupid like that, I speak from experience.

Ok, I tried the dry run and the wrap is still off for the last two sets of lugs and floor tom mount. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. I can't get the lugs in and I don't want to crack the wrap.

You could try a heat stripper gun and GENTLY warm the wrap.

It should become flexible enough to get back in position.

I don't guess I have to mention that you should be VERY CAREFUL to avoid damaging the wrap and or lighting it on fire.(this can happen REALLY fast on old wrap)

Have you removed all of the dried up adhesive from the wrap and the shell? If not, then do it, it could make a difference. I tried heat on one once to strech it, it was a disaster.

hey jccabinets, yes I removed it with lacquer remover. I've been told to try sunlight to warm the wrap evenly or also to try a hair dryer before the heat gun. Any thoughts? I am very cautious and don't want to screw this up. Thanks for your advice regarding the dry run with the lugs.

Well, I put mine out in the sun on a 100 degree day for a few hours and had a clamp on each end. I would pull on it and try to strech it out. After I thought I had it streched, I took it in the house in the air conditioning to cool, with the cla,ps still holding it, and that did not work. Its impossible to heat the entire wrap. If your gonna try anything with heat go for the hair dryer but be carefull with that too. Maybe you should attatch the wrap to the shell using the lugs up untill the hole start to miss-align, then apply some heat to the wrap that is still loose and see if you can slowly strecht it enoug to get the next set of lug hole to line up. In other words, heat the sections of wrap between the lugs as you go. Hell I dont know just an idea. All I know is I tried a heat gun on mine and its toast. Good luck let us know how it goes. Sure wish others would chime in on this, we cant be the only ones to ever encounter this issue.

What about if you were to use the wrap the way it is and just re-drill the holes in it for the lugs? Its only off 3/16" correct? Would the lugs cover the oblonged holes in the wrap? Or drill all the holes in the wrap just a tiny bit bigger and give it some slack, or play.

lol, still thinking!

Oh, I suppose the wrap has some fade and marks from the lugs being tighten down, so the lugs need to go right back where they were. Dang it

Thank you!

Other than a fine sanding of the Shell, I think you Guys have covered just about each of the options...
