Revelle

Hey Y'all,

I was out pawn shopping today and came across this old Revelle kit. It has sonor type tear drop lugs and the floor tom leg brackets look just like ludwigs brackets. It also has a rail consolette with a clip type tom holder and a bass drum mounted cymbal stand all ludwig knock off I think. It is a natural wood finish. it almost looks like someone took the wrap off of it, but the badges are still grommetted on very well. It is a 14 snare, 12" tom, 14" tom and 20" bass drum with a bunch of stands they have in the back I havent seen yet. They ae asking $250 out the door. It also has some real cheap cymbals.

I don't know Poppy, without the wrap....I kinda discount the removal, but then that's just me. I would have to see the stands, cymbals...everything. Offer them 175. It is a Star kit, are they 3 ply or 6 & 9 ply? If there are re-rings, they are 3s, other than that, they are 6 & 9. The cymbals will be the key. If they are old Zs, it could be worth it, if they are Krut or Kingstone....meh...other than just being original, they are not worth a lot.

Is the wood decent ? Or is it just vertical-grained Luan ? Revelles were MIJ.

If it's better wood than Luan, then maybe offer $200. If it's Luan, offer $150-75 as Jonni suggested.

If the cymbals aren't trashed you could always turn 'em for about $40-50, maybe....

I'd say it depends on how bad you want a project. If it looks like someone took off the wrap, they probably did, and like JS said, that isn't a good thing. Usually when I see a MIJ drum missing a wrap I pass, no matter how cheap. The wrap is one of the coolest things about these old drums, so without it, there isn't a lot of incentive to fixing them up (if replacement wraps were cheaper, however...) And I dont think luan looks very good stained/painted. The pattern of the grain is just not that aesthetically pleasing (to me.)

That said, those are fun and desirable sizes, so if you've always wanted a bop kit in any certain wrap, and you're willing to spring for the cost of the wrap at one of the online dealers, it could be a worthwhile project for you.

Well Poppy, hated to see that game....was hoping for some good ol'fashioned Tech A$$kickin'...not a 'Horns fan, but then again, at the right time of the season, not a Tech fan either....but this week I was!!!

That aside, these are cool sizes, but if they are 3 ply, they won't tune "up", they have a deeper natural resonance than typical jazzers. But, you can change that up somewhat by lacquering the interiors and putting some thin single ply heads on. I would hit them with at least 3-4 coats of clear lacquer, either satin or gloss.

Hello, Poppy;

I just checked this forum here, to find some REVELLE info. Bought a small bass drum a few days ago, and did some work on it.

This Revelle BD is 14x20", has a very nice wrap, luckily in good condition. The Sonor-type lugs (check Sonormuseum for more info, the catalogues!) are very cute, but show lots of pitting. Same on the other chrome parts, but at least I got them all. Even the chromed steel hoops, with matching inlays, plus ALL the claws and T's...a lucky find for little money.

I hope this message will reach you somehow; then I can post pictures. Nothing fancy, but lots of fun. And - that little Beauty sounds amazing, due to the fairly thick shell. Compared with my 22" Tempo (early Pearly) set, it's much stronger. But many Japanese Stencil kits were produced cheap, with thin shells. The Tempo has 3 re-rings, and the 16" FT as well! So far, I have seen that only on a '50s Gretsch BD.

This is my very first post here.

I'm curious if you ever bought that Revelle drum set.

Cheers,

Sonorian
