Revelle 60's Bongos . . . maybe.

Loading...

My 20 year old college student percussionist daughter will be living off the grid doing wildlife conservation work out where the wild things are. Most of the kids bring whatever music they have. To supplement her ukulele, I picked up a set of bongos off Craig's List. They look to be vintage, still in the original box. No rust, no dings, like new.

I'd like to send her with them knowing a bit about them. As a wanna-be hippy and tree-hugger, it would mean a bit to her to know they were from the 60s.

They have a "Revelle" name plate, red sparkle finish. The box says "Model 18108" and "Colors RED SPARK". I know the 1966 Star cataloge has a model 108 that looks similar, but the center piece on mine is white.

Images might help you help me.

Those would have been made in 1808 [the "1" in the middle was for confusion]. RED SPARK was a well-known colors-man at the time, and the name "Revelle" was stolen from a line of 1/24 scale model cars, possibly from the future.

Now that I've finished lying, I don't think you need any help - we just call em "60s MIJ bongos" and yours are an absolutely top-flight example. Those heads are almost always torn, on at least one drum. You sound like a super dad. Welcome to the forum.

Each of the above.... plus they were made by Star... who eventually evolved into Tama drums...

Cheers

Yep, Star for sure. A nice find. I have a couple of pairs of Star bongos and the bridge is also white on one pair.
