Restoring old Pearl Exports with Krylon Glitter Blast

Hi all,

Total board noob; actually a guitar player that built a kit for myself last year from various Craigslist offerings and had some old Exports lying around as leftovers. Had been thinking about refinishing an old guitar with Glitter Blast, had never used it but saw some attempts online. Then decided instead to try it on the Exports first and refinish them and give them to a good friend that I thought could put them to good use. So thought I'd post the process up here to share. Not sure what year these are (maybe someone recognizes the badge and can confirm?) but I'm guessing 80's; the inside seems to be particle board but was happy to discover once I had the wraps off that the outside was at least plywood. 10", 12", 16", 22" kit - the 12" had some chipping and separation on the bearing edge; my makeshift fix was to pour a bunch of crazy glue on it and hope it would harden and pull it all together - seemed to do the trick at least enough for my purposes. Will post later with some pics of the next steps in the process.

I taped up the top and bottoms with masking tape and put newspaper around the inside. The tape extended about 1/4 inch onto the face of the drums. I read another refinishing post somewhere that mentioned using drywall compound to seal the grain so I decided to try that. Once I sanded it off there wasn't much left but it did seem to do that. Didn't do much for bigger grooves and such but I'm sure if I had been more careful it would have worked. Then I put on close to 10 coats of Krylon ruddy brown primer - no real reason for using that color, it's just what the hardware store had. The streaking you see is the crazy glue fix attempt. Next up is Glitter Blasting!

The first two pics you see here are after the first attempt to spray with Glitter Blast; I simply pulled the cans out of the box and went to town - man was that a mistake. The paint would stop spraying except for a clear goopy substance at times, it was running all over the place - d'oh! After some online research I realized I should have warmed up the cans in warm water and the next day I did that before continuing on. Had to sand out some of the runs first but it went on very well once the cans were warmed. Just used a bucket and hot water from the tap as warm as it would get, left them in about 10-15 minutes. Next up the final product.

Ended up putting on about 10-14 coats of glitter blast, then 6 coats of Krylon clear coat. I didn't go to the length of sanding the clear coat and buffing to make the surface smooth, I simply left it as is and its slightly bumpy but I don't mind it at all and the glitter still comes through very well. Next up was reassembly, lots of fun if you're self loathing. Took a while but as you can see they look pretty sharp now at least to my eyes. The last pic is me waiting in the dark at my buddy's place waiting to surprise him with his new drum kit! I worked covertly with a friend and his wife to get him out of the house then snuck in and set them up. He was dumbfounded when he saw them to say the least. I had a lot of fun refinishing these and look forward to many jams at his place on these beauts! Thanks for reading.

I think they look great. You did a great job on them and provided some useful information for others. Above all, I think its great you did this for your buddy and surprized him the way you did. Now I just need a guitar playing buddy like you!

I'm really suprised how good a rattle can finish that is.

I'm going to find some of this stuff and experiment with it... "Glitter Blast"? I'll be looking for it now...
