Restoring 60's Ludwigs

Steve - Nice save man. The drums look great.

If you're coming back to drumming after a long lay-off, I highly recommend you get, Tommy Igoe's video; 'Great Hands For Life.' It'll give you a warm-up work-out that will have your chops back in no time. He also covers off technique better than just about any other instructional videos I've seen. Trust me, give yourself a fighting chance to come back successfully, get Tommy's video. You'll thank me later. Here's a You Tube video clip of some guy performing the basic warm-up. There is also an intermediate and advanced version of the warm-up depending on your skill level. It's all on the video and Tommy is great teacher.

Love the kit.

Those look fantastic!! I tell ya what I would do, and this is just a suggestion, but I would put classic Leg mounts and legs on that 14" tom. It would make a beautiful 14" floor tom. Then you would have a nice double floor tom set up with the three up toms, or you could mix and match all type of set up's. 12" up and 14" down. 13" up and 16" down. 12" 13" up 14" 16" down.

I will DEFINITELY pick up the Igoe material. That video amazing. Just what I am needing presently. Many thanks for that!

Vibes, good idea. That was a clubbie floor tom originally. I went to the snare mount many years back as it gave me a nice arcuate layout. I mull converting it back to a floor tom from time to time. Easy enough to remount legs. Or I might add a 16x18 floor tom along the way. One nice thing is it's easy enough to make any additions match with the paint already on hand. I just have to talk my painter off the ledge. I sent him pictures of the kit. That should convince him it is a worthwhile endeavor.

Apparently, a decision was made in my absence (or dormancy) to make cymbal holes larger. My top hat will not fit onto the Gilbralter clutch and the small splashes won't fit over the washers on the cymbal stands. No big deal as the splashes are sorely lacking in quality (one I have had since I was 10) and will be replaced. Also my hats have a Zildjian top but a Camber bottom so will be swapping those out for a new pair soon.

Also restored a 70's(?) Gretsch snare that came my way in the early 80's. It had been re-wrapped in yellow, and got painted blue with the rest back in the day. Just put a badge on it this afternoon (It's never had one since I have owned it.) It came out sweet:

That, along with the converted concert tom are the beginning of a second kit I plan to leave at a friend's studio.

My 10 year old home sick from school yesterday and today and I cannot play, at least not properly. It's killing me. Tomorrow, however, I attack!

Steve the kit looks fantastic!!! The red really POPS bigtime!! Looks like a very fun kit to play. I've been away from the kit for some time myself. VERY rusty but getting there. Anyway enjoy the drums I bet they sound great.

John!!! That's a great warmup!! You always post the best stuff. This will be a huge help for me getting warmed up. And back in shape in general. Can't wait to try it tomorrow! And I'll grab his vid too. Thanks. Glenn.

I just this moment figured out from reading through various forums that the snare pictured above is evidently an Ajax, not a Gretsch. I was told it was Gretsch when it was given to me back in the early 80's. Not having had much experience with Gretsch drums, I took that at face value all these years, hence the Gretsch badge I installed! LoLoLoLo

Oh well, Gretsch badges fetch a nice coin these days so I guess I will be "re-branding" that snare to put things right.

Cool looking badges on those Ajax drums. I have a feeling it will be next to impossible to find one though. I know nothing at all about Ajax other than what I have learned in the last 15 minutes. Never even heard of them.

It's been a while now, but I wanted to add just one thing to this thread. I had flanges re-cut on four drums that were in dire need, and I hope to get around to doing the rest before long. Sound is much improved.

Mike Strickler at Avenue Drums in Charlotte did the work for me.

Mike's a great guy and really knows his drums. His custom made pieces are beautiful. If you need some work done on your drums, or are looking for a custom set and are anywhere near Charlotte, check Mike out. I highly recommend him.

As for me, I am enjoying playing this beautiful kit again. Even doing a bit of writing and recording with an old friend, and loving it. Here's a photo of the kit set up with mics feeding the interface.

Best to all.
