hello to all, I'm restoring this 20s Ludwig drum, so many surprises... it was completely painted golden, the inner shell is maple dense bird eye, seen in the catalog that made only in special order instead of mahogany, all hardware is "patent pend." so 10s 20s era

I started to removing gold paint with the chemical remover, it's not difficult but not even a quick thing ... the first discovery that below was black ebonized, or blue dark (it was black but in contact with the chemical it became blue), the second discovered a legionaries logo ...

... the paint remover took away everything, under was a maple layer, so the shell solid mapple bird eye with a 1mil coating of normal maple

the external conservation condition due to all the paints is really incredible, it seems almost out of the factory, however is still dirty with blue in the veins, I have to finish the cleaning, even the badge that was painted over, and is 100 years old

will update you with news ^_^

if you have information to add, it will be appreciated, like that of the legionnaires logo

chers! :)

you think the legionaire logo was very rare ???

as soon as it emerged was not more possible to save, the chemical dissolves it completely ...

I saw this drum on eBay. I’m restoring a 12 X 15 drum that was painted blue. When I started to remove the paint it was also painted white mine is also maple. Was kind of hoping for mahogany when I bought it so it would match my other drums. I think maple was used if the drum was going to be painted as opposed to stain for mahogany.

Good luck with your project.

the original paint was really black, it is visible because the gold color was applied with the skins mounted, then removed the skins the edge was just black ebonized, in contact with the stripper it immediately became blue

so the original drum was black with emblem military, I saw in the catalog many black ebonized finishes, and that type of drum in special order maple, but I could not understand that logo what it was, if it was rare and could have some value, or just for historical curiosity ... I use these drums as a light jazz club bass drum, they are super! never tried in maple, very curious !

Here is the catalogue and a photo of the current state of my 12 x 15. You had a choice of mahogany or maple. It didn't appear to be a special order.

I'm not sure about the legionnaire logo's value but it doesn't matter now.

Could it be that the outer ply of your drum is mahogany? The grain kind of resembles it.

Good luck with your project and keep us up to date.

when I saw black I also thought of the external mahogany, instead removed all paints below I found normal maple, the shell is 3mil solid maple bird eyes + 1mil maple standard w/ solid maple re-rings, if that is what is identified in the catalog it should be "AEROKRAFT contruction" ... I still have to finish cleaning it in the veins and then I try to play it

et voilĂ , finished, restoring I prefer to remove only the superfluous, if necessary to repair, for the rest keep as much as possible the original aged with a worn look, without risking that effect of fake historical
