Restored my 1967 Slingerlands

Loading...

Hello all! I recently restored my 1967 Slingerland kit and wanted to share the before, during, and afters with you. I bought this kit in March 2012 and it came to me as a 20/13/14. The toms had incorrect hoops, one of the BD hoops was incorrect, the consolette was in bad shape, and someone had done a terrible rewrap job on the floor tom and decided to sand the inside of the shell at every hole while they were at it. However, I was able to use this as my practice kit for about 5 years while I acquired the correct parts and such...and they looked good from a distance. (The 13" tom is in excellent condition, so I'm going to sell it.)

These 3 drums all had chocolate milk interiors and the toms had small knob mufflers. So, I acquired a 12" tom with the same features, but with a heavily scratched and cracked gold satin flame wrap. I also acquired a previously rewrapped Hollywood Ace with chocolate milk interior from a good friend (more details on this one in the next post).

Here are photos of what I started with. I didn't get a before pic of the snare with the white satin wrap it had on it because it was an obvious rewrap considering it had a 50s to early 60s double pad muffler, which left the original bottom hole for the correct muffler in the shell but no hole in the wrap. Anyway, you can see the splotchy dark spots that were on the bass drum and the condition of the others, which is why it didn't cause me too much heartburn to rewrap these.

More in the next post.

I noticed the discoloration inside the snare and initially thought it might be dark brown overspray from who knows what...and I couldn't help but notice that someone etched their name in one of the reinforcement rings. When I pulled the wrap off, I saw what initially appeared to be a section of the exterior mahogany that had been ripped off by whoever stripped and rewrapped it before. After I got all the glue stripped off, I realized it had been in a fire and some of the mahogany had been charred and it had blackened some spots inside as well, thus the overspray-looking spots in the interior. I had to sand the charred sections of mahogany down and fill them. I also sanded away the etched name. This necessitated sanding down the entire interior and re-spraying the "chocolate milk." As mentioned before, the interior of the floor tom had been sanded in many spots, so it got the same treatment. I committed the rookie mistake of letting acetone run through lug holes and strip interior paint in the bass drum and the 12...so they were sanded and repainted as well.

More to come...

Well, as I said, they looked good from a distance despite all the issues that led me to rewrap the kit...and the 13" tom - which is most noticeable in the first photo - is in beautiful condition. The finished photo is coming soon.

Thanks for the compliment, though!

As previously mentioned, I had the interiors re-sprayed. I brought one of the drums in to Home Depot and had them color match the interior color. It's close, but not exact because their color scanner (whatever it's called) picked up some yellowish color from the maple interior. The paint sample looked spot on, but it's a little yellow after being lightly sprayed on the interior. I had a friend who has much more experience with a paint gun do the spraying.

That same friend has much more experience restoring vintage drums, and wrapping drums in general, so I had him teach me how to do it the right way. I had no experience rewrapping a kit prior to this, especially dealing with glass glitter. My friend recommended scoring the wrap where it overlapped, carefully breaking it off, and using a file to clean up the edges. This was not easy, but worked very well...as you can see in the photos.

Final photo coming next.

Here is the finished product! I love the green glass. I wish I could get a better photo to show how vivid and beautiful the green really is, but it's been raining here so frequently. I'll eventually get one and share it.

This was a lot of work, but fun and totally worth the effort. These drums sound amazing...especially mic'ed up at church.

I hope you like!

By the way, the green glass glitter came from Jammin' Sam. However, according to him, he doesn't have much left and he's not going to carry it anymore because deep green glass is moving better for him.
