Restoration of a 1969? Ludwig piccolo snare (3x13)

I was thinking later 9X13 toms might have the same (top anyway) COS hoop...

If it's the bottom hoop, then I guess its off to the plater!

Okay, I'm gonna stop at this point of the restoration process.

I have removed all of the paint and most of the rust, although there are some areas where the top rim is slightly pitted. (and some scratches caused by me.)

I can only tighten the screws that attach the lugs to the shell so much. I'm worried that their age might cause them to break. I have bought some inexpensive Remo heads, and have the snare tuned up, but not to its max pitch yet. I want to slowly ease into that.

So far there is no problem with the lugs turning in the direction of tension. So, it looks like they are tight enough to tune it up a little further.

The snare is currently restored to a point where it still looks like a vintage snare and only the heads have been replaced. Oh, and it's playable. To me that is one of the most important reasons to restore one of these guys.

I guess I'll put it up for sale here after I read all the rules for selling here. If no one is interested then it will go onto eBay.

Thanks to everyone who posts here. This forum has really been helpful since I've only dealt with Slingerlands up until now.

Any final advice before selling is still very much appreciated.

After initial bedding of the heads, I always wait overnight before I try to go for final tension. Get them in tune with themselves, 'crack' them in (pressing the center of the head), check tune with it self and put it on the shelf and grab a beer.

Go back the next day to re-check in tune with itself, and then final tune. It holds a lot better that way, and you are not fighting the re-shaping of the head in addition to the tension you are applying.

If the price is reasonable when it is ready to sell, I might be interested! I have a feeling you will be asking more than I can swing right now...:(

Finally finished.

I had a hard decision to make. Clean it till it sparkles and replace/re-plate anything rusty and re-wrap, or bring it to a playable, yet still keep its collectable value.

I just put it in the for sale area, and will not put it on eBay for a few days so the VDF members can get a whack at it.

I am wrestling with the value of this darned thing. There's very little statistical data to determine what it's actually worth.

I'm not gonna be that guy who puts it on eBay at $4000 and keeps re-listing it for $50 less each time, over and over.

I do have a good idea of what its probable value is thanks to some members here.

Thanks again to everyone who chimed in.

Jazz Combo transition Badge Pink Oyster Pearl $868.88 15 eBay 18-Feb-13

Once upon a time I kept track of all Jazz Combo sales but I stopped doing that thoroughly a few years back. Too busy with the Paiste 602 and Sound Creation project. Although I did record that Pink Oyster Pearl just for fun.

Note also eBay ruined some of the interesting analysis possibilities by making it too hard to spot when drums are shipped overseas (especially to Japan which was paying serious money for them). Now you would have to wait until (and if) feedback is posted and trace back...

So my quick take on the data is they used to go for $400 plus in excellent condition. Then the GFC hit. Can't say how far prices for these little drums have recovered yet. Pink Oyster Pearl is always sought after so that's a whole different kettle of fish. What you can sell one for on the day is unpredictable. If you are willing to wait you can probably get a higher price but cash in the hand now may also be attractive. :2Cents:

Oh thanks Zenstat. That's some valuable research there.

I put it up for sale here on Friday, but was probably asking too much for what the Jazz Combo's are fetching these days.

I'm learning, just a bit slowly though.
