I would like your help to decide on what snare color you think is better.
Snare #1 (the first picture) is a Grover Maple.
Snare #2 (the last picture) is a Mapex MPX Maple.
Both snares are 10 lug, 6 ply and are built well.
The kit is an Ellis Custom 6 ply maple kit with a "Duco" Lacquer finish.
Which snare do you prefer with this kit, the Grover or the Mapex?

I think the Grover looks better with that kit...the Mapex is more of a reddish color. The blonde maple goes with it better, IMHO.
Thanks for the reply. The Mapex MPX Maple snare only comes in black lacquer with black hardware, or natural lacquer with chrome hardware. I do think the MPX looks more "amber-ish" or "orange-ish" than a true "natural" finish.
Also, the Mapex looks a lot deeper, but in reality, the Grover is 5" deep, and the Mapex is 5.5".
I sent Mapex an email with the picture below attached, showing the Grover and MPX side by side. I asked them if that was their version of a natural finish, or did I perhaps get one from a darker batch or something? I haven't heard back from them yet.
It looks more like an "Amber" finish on the Mapex.
Don't ask Grover to explain Near and Far.
IMHO A black snare is the way to go with that kit, but If I'm forced to choose between the two, Grover is better.

While the Grover looks better, the only important decision for me would be which snare sounded better in the context of the whole kit and the music it will used for. Sound and performance comes first, looks are a distant 2nd in my opinion.
I like the Grover finish a lot better. It's not as jumpy behind the kit. ( meaning the Mapex pops more ) And I do believe that is the Mapex version of a natural finish. As far as hearing back from them, who knows. I personally never got into any of their drums or hardware and years ago they were the only company that never got back to me with regard to anything.
The Grover snare looks better, but I would pick the snare based off the sound instead of the finish.
That Ellis duco kit is pretty sweet looking though. What size is that bass drum?
Not for nothing, but a Black Beauty would look phenomenal with this kit.
