Repurposed 66’ Pioneer snare

Loading...

I have a 1966 Ludwig Pioneer snare in black duco that the paint is chipped badly, missing tension rods, dingy on the inside and lots of patina and rust on the NoB lugs and hardware, basically in really poor shape.

It was screaming to be brought back to life!

As my final quarantine project I decided to do a complete refurbish. I was able to get a piece of Psychedelic Red wrap from Bum Wrap Co that is a very close match to my 67’ Ludwig Hollywood kit.

Came out pretty sweet and will add it to the kit when I’m back in CT

Some of my favorites from the kits in the collection
58 WFL New Yorker Blue Sparkle
67 Ludwig Hollywood Red Psychedelic
69 Ludwig Standard Red Ruby Strata

A few of my favorite snares
20's Leedy Black Elite
51 Leedy & Ludwig Knob Tension
58 WFL Buddy Rich Classic Blue Sparkle
63 Walberg & Auge Sea Blue Agave Green Pearl
66 Leedy Shelly Manne Blue Agate Pearl

I have a Pioneer from that same era too! It needs a top to bottom restore as the pervious owner painted the shell, inside and out, with black house paint. I never know what color to go for ith rewraps but that Psychedelic looks great!

What color is it inside? White? I'm not as familiar with the Ludwigs from that time period.

63' Slingerland Gene Kruppa kit (W/ COB Snare)
64' Gretsch Bop kit
65' Ludwig Club Date kit

Yours looks awesome - great job!

I'm working on a 65 Pioneer as well. Some surface rust on the hoops and hardware, but the red sparkle wrap is in really great shape. I've been looking for one recently and I got a great deal on it, and I'm pumped to finally add one to the collection.

You did a great job! BumWrap provides excellent wrap. I believe you picked the "Psychedelic Red - More Blue"? They have four different Psych Red colors! They sent me samples and I'll post them here. I also made a Jazz Festival Tribute snare drum, wrapped in the same color as yours. I believe my shell was from a Rocker series.

As to your Pioneer, I also have a mid-60's Pioneer. It was wrapped in a thick green sparkle automotive upholstery! I removed the upholstery some months ago and had the shell repaired. I finally decided on Mod Orange from Jammin' Sam. Just installed it this morning! I'll leave the clamps on the seam for 24 hours before drilling out the holes.

Again, kudos on your build. It really looks great!

The orange wrap looks great. May I ask what you used to glue the wrap at the clamp point? Thanks in advance!

Glad my post helped you pick the color! Jammin' Sam provides excellent versions of Citrus Mod and Mod Orange, but their version of Psychedelic Red is nowhere near as accurate as BumWrap!
