Replacing old straps on vintage fiber cases

Loading...

Forgive me for being so slow. I'm not the mot handy guy in the world, but once I figure out what I'm actually supposed to do, I don't have trouble. I am not worried about the replacement straps--I have some leather belts and nylon lined up. The rivets are giving me the trouble.

Is drilling them out my only option? Won't that enlarge the diameter of the holes in the cases? Also, what kind of rivets are they? Are they pop rivets--because it seems I need a special gun for those?

You would need to carefully drill a (small) hole through the dead centre of the rivet.. the aim is for the rivet to collapse.. the leftover remnants of the rivet may then be removed with pliers.

They will not be "Pop Rivets".. Pop Rivets do not fit flush on the inside of the case.. They would intrude and probably scratch the drum.

The split rivets are commonly used in the luggage industry in suitcase manufacturing... Also Leather workers use them.. Maybe you should take the case to a leather worker or Shoe repairer.. I would be surprised if He/She did not fit the straps while you wait & for a minimal Fee..

Cheers

John

Thanks for the slow tutorial, fellas! Okay--so I definitely need to drill them out. Then, what kind of rivet and tools do I use to attach the new straps? Thanks again!

Funny $hit. The boys gave you some really good suggestions though. Looks to me like which ever one you choose to do the job it'll come out good for you. Any of the preceding suggestions will work for you. Post up a photo after you do the repair I want to see how it comes out.

Lol, I know! Will do. I am going to try and get this done this weekend. The belt I had may not work though--bass drum case is deep, and the belt seems a bit to short. Depends on what I can find. I'll update the thread with a before and after.
