Jeff - Jerry/Jinx from Jenkins-Martin Drums uses a long-bed vertical belt sander to work the outside of his Blaemire shells. I imagine a vertical sander would make short work of that ply removal. That's a lot of work you took on there. I know it can't be easy and it's not something I would attempt. I'm psyched to see how this drum is going to come out!

Ok, about another hour (three beers) later its done. I just used a stiff putty knife that I had sharpened on my edge sander and a lot of elbow grease. I am glad I did it, now I have a good solid foundation for the new veneer.

Also pictured are the remaining shells. The 5" snare is from John and the marching snare is from Bill, both were gifts to me, thank you John and Bill!

Now, which snare to use with the the kit? The sizes of the other shells are, 13, 16, 18, 22. And I have been going back and forth on the wood species. One day Im thinking teak or zebra, something different. Then like today I remember how great Johns clubbies looked in mahogany. I like that mahogany look and the fact that Ludwig did produce drums in that finish.

This is a project that has been sitting on the shelf for a long time. Being Superbowl Sunday I figured its kind of a holiday so I wanted to work on the shells while I wait for the game.

Jeff, cut a section out, hinge it, add shelving and lugs as pulls, store your drum trim parts inside.....nah forget that idea !i

I could never imagine doing this. Im very impressed! Especially the time you did it in! I thought it would take a serious amount of time and I had no idea how I would have even gone about it. I wish you could have video taped the process because it seems like you did it quick as well. Nice work Jeff!

Well this drum had so much outer ply missing that I really could not have hurt it any. There were a few places where it was real loose and came right off, the rest was still glued pretty good. Im not doing it to the rest of the drums!
