Removing Rust From Chrome

Loading...

I just have to share this with all of you. Recently I bought a vintager set of chrome Fibes drums, I also started a thread here asking about ways to clean / polish chrome, all good info. however many of the chemicals cleaners I tried didn't really get the job done with regard to getting the rust off the chrome, I did some more researching and found a tip that I had to try, and ITS THE BEST METHOD FOR REMOVING RUST. You take a can of coke, (not diet) and roll up a piece of aluminum foil, let it soak in the coke. using the shinging side, start rubbing the finish, ITS AMAZING, THE RUST MELTED AWAY IN SECONDS!!!!!I was skepical at first thinking the foil would scratch the chrome, not so, I guess the metal is harder than the foil, and the coke is a natural rust eater, I then followed up using chrome polish, and they look like new, I was floored with the results. when I'm done, I'll post pics.

Not to stir the pot, but I have read that aluminum foil will scratch your chrome, possibly not to your eye, but it sets you up for future problems. I have read this many times here..... and just to keep it fair, I've also read that it is perfectly safe.

+1 on that Kevin. Blue Magic Metal polish is what I use and it works great, also received a compliment from a guy that bought a Dyna shell from me asking about how I got it so clean and told him just that polish and elbow grease, and foil will scratch, minutely or a lot, but you are putting metal against metal. Though one is softer, it's still metal. I don't have photos, but when I heard about the foil thing, I tried that and the polish I use, side by side on a rim. Definitely can see the foil scratch...

Its better to have people think you're an idiot, than to open your mouth and prove them wrong, unless you doubt yourself then speak away....

I was amazed at how well Dawn dish soap works... soak the parts for a while (over night at least), then do'em like the dishes.

Any of the recommended polishes to make them shine.

Not a Guru... just interested..

I will second the Dawn dish soap. I recently tried this on some hardware and couldnt believe how well it worked. However, the process was a bit messy.

So just soak the lugs in a solution of Dawn dish soap and water overnight, then rinse off the next day and you're good to go? Does this also remove rust, or just built up dust and grime?

I specifically used the dawn to remove rust from the inner hardware of the lugs, not the lugs themselves. I soaked the hardware in the dawn for 3 days, then used a toothbrush to lightly scrub parts and rinsed (I imagine a toothbrush would be too rough on the lugs themselves). The rust came off fairly easily.

I used some turtle wax chrome cleaner/polish to remove rust from the lug casings. With a bit of elbow grease the rust came off and the lug casings became very shiny.

Good luck!
