I just bought this on eBay. I may want to remove the black gloss paint & "chip resistant enamel" from lugs & rims. What is the best way to do this without damaging the hardware?

Same colors I had on a Powertone, but it was only a single coat of spray paint. I got some paint remover from Home Depot. Try the citrus type first if possible. Won't hurt the chrome. Spray and leave until paint bubbles. Wipe off with cloth or plastic scrapper. No metal scrappers. If he painted that well, might take more than one application.

I've never had acetone affect chrome and compared to paint thinner or turpentine it's a stronger solvent. Not very kind to the skin so wear hand protection if you use it.
Yes, be very careful if you use acetone because the molecule is so small, it will go right through your skin and into your blood and you'll get a headache you won't soon forget! It's extremely volatile so don't be near any ignition source. I heard a story about someone using acetone and a wire brush to clean some engine parts and the wire brush sparked against something he was cleaning and BLAM!

I've had times when it's been very dark and I dropped a wrench and saw a spark.
Acetone is nasty, no doubt about it. But you can have brushes with paint that paint thinner won't touch and acetone will dissolve it. I think of it as "super paint thinner". It will eat rubber gloves pretty fast.
Yes - I've used Acetone lately - last year on some drum projects. It is nasty stuff but it does the job. I don't know the damage I've done - internally - by having that stuff on my hands. Will have to wait and see. I used some to get paint off my hands - it worked, but now I'm a basket case.......I know I have at least ONE disease I picked up in the last yr. = eBay-itis.....I think my wife has got some kind of a cure in mind....oh well....
Ya - I'll give Acetone a try on the Pearl hoops-n-lugs and see how that goes down. I'll try to steer clear of any contamination this time.

Don't try quitting cold turkey man........ it sucks
Lacquer thinner works well too.......doesn't harm the chrome and takes the paint off real easily. Make sure the area is WELL VENTILATED and wear gloves as well.....I think it works even better than acetone. I had a Ludwig big-beat hi-hat that I got real cheap off of ebay. Someone had the bright idea to paint over the chrome with "chrome" paint, you know, that stuff in a can that is silver and looks nothing like real chrome? Anyway, I used a rag and lacquer thinner and it came off very easily. And the chrome underneath the paint wasn't that bad! Some people's kids.......................... :rolleyes:
