Removing Adhesive From Maple Bd Shell

Loading...

I've got a Slingerland 3-ply natural maple bass drum that I'm considering selling in the near future. The drum had a strip of green sparkle adhesive tape running across the center. I've just removed the green sparkle tape. The opposite side of the tape was a silver sparkle with the adhesive applied. I want to remove the silver sparkle adhesive from the maple shell without damaging the shell in any way.

Any and all suggestions as to products and/or methods of removal would be GREATLY appreciated.

THANKS in advance for your time and your help!Bowing

The best thing to try on this is a product called Xelene. You can get it at lowes or home depot. I think one of the brand names is Xylol. Xylene will remove adhesive from a car without harming the paint, however, it will strip all polish off of the finish. Id try a spot on the bottom of the bd shell to be sure it dont discolor it. One little trick, wrap a shop rag, (not a paper towel) around your finger tip, apply the xylene to the tip of your rag covered finger and rub just on the area with the adhesive, and not beside it. This stuff has very strong vapors, is extremlly flamable and lay your used adhesive soaked rag out flat when your done. Wadded up rags with this volitile of chemical can cause spontanious combustion.

Xylene is strong stuff and will probably do the trick. It may also take off more than you wish. I'd try some denatured alcohol first, test first.

I have used lacquer thinner on old drums that I was going to re-wrap to see what happens. It did not damage the plastic wrap in my test. Try it on the bottom of the drum first.

Thank you!

I tried some adhesive remover to remove some glue residue from a shell, but this is VERY strong stuff and will probably take off everything. I second the denatured alcohol and possibly xylol suggestion.
