Remo smooth white Emperor heads

I know that Emperor heads are two ply, but I have been using smooth white ones for a while on my Ludwig kit, and they seem to behave a lot more like single ply ones in terms of sound and response. With a clear two ply head, you can see the moire' pattern that shows up when the two layers of Mylar are in contact with one another, and you can feel the plies rubbing together when you press on the collar. With these smooth white (uncoated) ones, that is absent. If I had an old worn out one, I'd just cut it apart and see, but I only have the two I'm using on my toms.

Anybody have any info about them? Are they two ply or just one heavier ply?

Thanks

Thanks, TommyP. I'm just wondering why they seem so different from clear or coated Emperors. Is it a different type of film? They're brighter and more ringy than any other two-ply that I've used, including Evans G2's.

Having played Emperors on my toms for years .. although always Coated Emperors I want to add .. I can only surmise that the coating itself most certainly "thickens" up the sound and feel. Take the coating away, and yeah ... they would certainly be a bit more open for sure! They are indeed two plies though, but again ... actually seem "thinner" as they are of the smooth variety. BUT! ... the Coated Emperor's are 2 plies of 7 mil, and the Smooth Emperor's are 2 plies of 7.5 mils .. so .. looks like REMO was compensating for the lack of coating on the smooth variety .. except .. they still sound more open!
