Refinishing/Restoring Natural Maple Hoops

Hello everyone,

I acquired a 1930s Leedy marching snare. The natural mahogany shell is in great condition and looks beautiful, however the natural wood hoops at one point were painted yellow. I want to restore the hoops as close to original as possibly. I have already sanded the old paint off and they are now bare wood. What else needs to be done? Should they be stained or something? Currently they look nothing like the natural hoops on another Leedy marching snare of the same era that I have. The hoops on that snare are more of a golden natural maple. So I’m wondering if there is something I should do to “bring out” the beauty of the wood hoops. Any help/guidance is greatly appreciated!

Rub them down with teak oil, or Danish oil. Pretty much the same thing. It will bring out the grain in the wood and darken them up a little. Then lacquer them natural. You could use a golden mahogany lacquer or something like that. Post a pic of the drum and hoops.

All you have to do is coat the wood with polyurethane or clear lacquer. The wood will automatically take on that 'golden' color.

That's what I do...clear, satin finish polyurethane (water base). Brings out the look of the wood and still looks natural.

If you just run a damp cloth over a section of the hoop, it will give you some indication of the colour which will be brought out by the clear lacquer...

Thanks for the help guys, that is exactly what I was looking for. Longjohn, the damp cloth "trial" method is exactly the ticket...looks like a clear lacquer will match pretty close. You guys are awesome!
