That's some obscure and interesting details on the evolution of the drums. I never knew the back story until years later. Didn't know (or care) who was an endorser of the drums back then either.
I knew I wanted standard depth and prefer birch over maple, which I feel (right or wrong) has a narrower tuning range. That feeling may be based on the type and quality of bearing edges available in the early 80's in mid to low line kits (stencils etc.). I have played several low end kits in recent years and been blown away. Yamaha's Stage Custom Birch line is so good, I helped my bass player get a set for his daughter who was using my RC kit for several years while I was traveling. The sound and quality of those "cheap" kits is on par with the old RC kits. Only the Taiwan made Remo heads need to be changed to U.S. made ones.
Anyway, I am glad I went with what I did for a lot of reasons. I knew the blue kit was going to be my 'last' kit, and it was my only kit for nearly 20 years until I got the bop kit and D20's a few years ago... Maybe 10 years ago now? Man time flies...
