I am sure there are experts in sound systems here based on the drum knowledge. :) I am very new and not sure what to look for. I do know we need at least an 8 channel mixer, 2 speakers, 8 microphones, cables and at least 2 monitors. We are a new band and would rather rent first unless we can find something good for a reasonable price. Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Are you wanting sound for an entire band? Is this the practise PA or the live PA?
I recommend Yamaha stuff. I used to have a nice 12 channel board that costs about $600 new, has 1000 watts of power, and is durable as all get out. You will need more than two speakers, as you need monitors AND mains. Peavey makes some durable speakers. They may not sound the best, but they are very, very durable. The drummer could better use a pair of headphones and save at least one monitor speaker. You will also find that a 1000 watt system is pretty underpowered in many cases, but perfect for many small venues.
As far as drum mic'ing goes, I definitely recommend getting a small board for the drums and sending it to the PA. I use an 8 channel (four mics, four line inputs) Yamaha mixer that costs a princely $120. I actually do two overheads, two snare mics (top and bottom) and trigger the rest. However, if you're playing jazz, this may not work for you. You could do two overheads, one snare and one kick mic. Don't cheap out on mics; however, Heil Sound PR22 are great overhead and snare mics and they are only $100 each!!!! Shure makes an affordable kick drum mic. Heil sound kick drum mic is better, but very pricey...
Look on CL- there's always an avenue of broken dreams that leads to an entire system sell off. Yes, I have seen barely used systems go for $0.10 on the dollar and they're barely used!!!!
But this is just my take. Others here will have completely different viewpoints on this subject.
