Ready Steady Go New Years Eve 1963/64/65

Loading...

This is an on-going piece of research.

RSG was broadcast from August 1963 until December 1966. Produced by Associated-Rediffusion the show was eventually networked nationally. The show was recorded at small studios in Rediffusion's headquarters in Kingsway, London.

There were three New Year Specials altogether and my drum kit appears to have taken part in them all. You would expect that if The Dave Clark Five were on a show DC would expect to be seen with his Red Sparkle Rogers drum kit as it was something of a trademark for him. As the RSG! studio was compact, and there were a number of bands on, it looks like the drummers had to share the same kit.

Working backwards from New Years Eve 1965 guests on the show were as follows.

The site below tells the story of Keith Moon borrowing the drums and that the above photo is from a rehearsal.

Below is from the show itself. Note that at rehearsal some of the lettering at the back is not completed. For the show itself some of the lettering is blacked-in.

The above is on Barrie Wentzell’s website.

I wrote to him asking if he had any more photos from that show. The guy is a gem, he just sent me the three photos below, no charge – top bloke! (I did make the point that I wasn’t after photographic art, I was just interested in the drum kit and these photos are each quirky in their own way, but great for my purposes.)

Notice here someone’s jacket draped over the drum kit. The cardboard bass drum logo is falling forward.

Lenny Davidson’s guitar on top of Mike Smith’s keyboard. Unique details on the drum kit very visible here.

The Animals

These photos of The Animals came from Kim Chester, a stallholder who I met at The UK National Drum Fair. He told me that he had had a conversation with John Steel, the drummer with The Animals, about the time he had borrowed DC’s drums. I thought he must be mistaken, but a few weeks later he sent me these.

The Searchers

Check out the background – this is at rehearsals. You can just see one of the toms.

The Kinks

Nothing yet. I had a note from Mick Avory to say he has no recollection of using DC’s drums. Let’s wait and see.

Looking for photos from 1965 it became apparent that the same thing probably happened the previous year. Kim Chester sent me a link which turned up these-

The Animals

That is a familiar looking drum kit.

These photos are from -

RSG! The New Year Starts Here! 31/12/64

London, Television House, Kingsway.

Interviews with members of The Stones

The Rolling Stones (performances from the 20-Nov-64 RSG!) - "Around And Around," "Little Red Rooster" and "Off the Hook." Also Mick Jagger demonstrates a new dancing style.

Guests:

The Animals

The Dave Clark Five

The Kinks

Manfred Mann

Freddie and the Dreamers

Susan Maughan

Sandie Shaw

Dusty Springfield

Kenny Lynch

That leaves me looking for photos of The DC5, The Kinks (again) and Freddie and the Dreamers.

Of course that makes me wonder about 1963.

The DC5

The photo below looks like it could be from the same rehearsal (drum kit is in the correct position in the studio, same dark jacket etc.).

This drum kit is going to take up my time for quite a while yet.

Wow - great to have such a historic, and documentable kit. Huge DC5 fan myself, but to be honest, I don't know if I'd be comfortable sitting behind his kit - I'm sure you've seen how high he sits, even with the throne adjusted, the tom angle would be very awkward I think... and what's the deal with the swapped 12", and 13"? Great research work, and I'm sure it will add value to your investment as well.
