Re-wrap query

Loading...

Hi guys. I'm shortly going to be wrapping my badly chipped early 50's Duco 24" Slingerland bass drum with WMP. I don't really want to have to cut the wrap back at the edges to allow the hoop of the head to go over the shell. Does anyone know whether there's enough slack in the Aquarian Vintage heads to accommodate the additional thickness? Thanks

Don't know for sure but doubt it. Maybe buy the heads first and go from there. A 50's duco may well have gone out of round. Photo?

Thanks!

Is the new wrap that much thicker than the old Duco?

Just a question... Why not re-wrap with the same Duco to keep it close to original?

The duco is a paint applied finish directly onto the shell, not a wrap.

You could still wrap with a duco wrap to keep the original look though.

Yes, and somebody on here just did that, correct? ...found it!

You guys at Compact could rustle up this finish PDQ if you don't already offer it no? However if fitting heads post-wrap is an issue, maybe stripping and repainting is in order? [edit]......except Gerard is looking at WMP. The Antique White Pearl I got from Precision a few years back was very thick.

Thanks guys. I confess that I've never seen Duco wrap before so please excuse my previous response. It looks really neat but the fact is that I'm building a 'new' WMP kit from orphan Slingerland drums and the bass drum is the last drum to finish the set. I've been using the Antique WMP from Precision so it sounds like that may be an issue for this bass drum unless I cut the wrap back to fit the heads. The drum came to me with calf heads which were quite tight on the shell so I know for a fact that they won't go back on once it's re-wrapped.

I wouldn't wrap that one. Amazing how duco will clean/polish up. Use it until a suitable shell shows up. Hoop fit could be tight with a wrap as well.

Thanks for the advice. I'll see how it goes but I really like the idea of the 24" and they don't come up that often. The duco on the underside of the drum is pretty poor and quite flaky which is why I'm considering the re-wrap. I'd probably strip the chipped black paint from the hoops and leave them clear.
