Re-ring/Edge Restoration Question- 60s Sky Blue Pearl Slingys

Loading...

Hey all- I picked up a gold/black niles badged Slingerland kit today that really needs some help. It would be a real easy restoration, except for one thing.. the re-enforcement rings/bearing edges on the resonant side of the toms are in really rough shape. I hate when people decide to remove the resonant heads and hurt the drums as a result. I do not have any experience with shell reconstruction and was hoping some of the experts here could give me some advice.. Is it even possible to fix separation like this? If so, any advice on how to go about doing so? I was hoping there would be a write up on this already but didn't find anything on the forum.. Sorry the pics aren't great, took them with my phone as soon as I got them home.. Thanks Keep on Pl.

Reglue any seperations.Have a pro recut the edges. If they are somewhat out of round, use Aquarian vintage oversized heads.Had a slingy re ring out of round by 3/16 inch! The vintage aquarian saved the day.

Those separations should be decently easy to reglue. Just do one section at a time.

Yellow Carpenter's glue and several clamps will fix -all- of the separations. Unless there are some really deep nicks in the bearing edge, it may not need re-cutting at all. Sometimes a little wood filler and fine sandpaper are all that is needed to put edges right. All simple fixes that you can do at home.

Out of round... that's a different story. Beautiful, old kit you have there. Well worth restoring. Novus 2 will bring that wrap back to life.

Thanks for the replies fellas! Kevins offered to give me a thorough rundown of how to put these shells back together again, which I am hoping to take him up on in the near future. Also, what is novus 2? I normally use my orbital buffer with some turtle wax which really does the trick... this wrap is in much better shape than the pictures show, really the best part of the kit as of now.

It's what some peeps use instead of electric buffers - which can leave nasty swirls on some wraps and will leave swirls on lacquer finishes.

Best of luck with your resto project. Photos when she's complete and all spruced up please!

John- thanks for the link. I think I will give that a try instead of the buffer since it could be too harsh like you said. Also, I will provide plenty of pics once I get some time to work on it. Thanks!
