Re-ring blues

Loading...

Guys-

I have been restoring a 1958 Slingerland Radio King with clamshell strainer. Thanks to the sage advise on this forum, everything was going along great. Wrap cleaned and polished, chrome cleaned and shiny, new part(s) ordered . . . . then shock/horror!

The reinforcement ring delaminated after my botched attempt in gluing back at a few places.

Specifically, the split seam is barely a finger nail gap in width, running maybe 40% length on the snare side. Spread around at three seperate locations.

There is an ever so small raised edge between ring & shell at one of the splits. Very minor but enough to feel a small ridge when feeling/brushing with finger tip.

Would like to please hear your comments for options?

A. Leave it, play as is; see if it sounds alright

B. Seek out a specialist who can do the repair.

C. Anything else?

I'm looking at it both from a playability & collector value. Is it recommended to do the repair if somewhere down the road the drum is put back up for sale?

Also, can you recommend a good repair guy for the job? I'm located in Chicago, IL.

Many thanks guys.

Max

PS. Thanks for taking the time to read this long winded post.

Did it separate in areas that weren't clamped? Is it a solid shell? You might want to use a gap filling glue. Just a guess but maybe the ring may have shrunk and is puling away from the shell.

Hi Lucky-

Yes.

Yes.

Using Elmere's Pro glue, which I think has filling power.

I think you're probably right regarding the ring pulling away from shell.

Is the Elmers like Gorilla glue in that you have to moisten the area to be glued? I would just use the glue in a small area without any clamps and see how it holds. You might throw off the trueness (is that a word?) of the shell if you try to force it back to the ring. I am in the Chicago area and have someone who does great work. He has done edge work for me on my old slingerland kit.

You should be using CARPENTERS glue. You know the stuff furniture/cabinet makers use.......Get a smaller medical surringe, load it up with carpenters glue and inject it into the crack, then clamp the re-ring down all along the crack in several places. Let sit for at least a day. You shouldn't have any problems after that. Then all you have to do is lightly sand the edges smooth and your done.

Carpenters glue will not adhere to a surface with existing glue on it, it will eventually fail.

Be careful!!!!!! I used a small clamp to do a siimilar repair on a 63 slingy to and using clamp put it out of round. Gave it a flat spot. Was a bummer.

If the separation is in three different areas maybe removing the ring entirely then re-gluing it will spread the tension evenly around the ring??? I made a floor tom out of a Slingerland 12x15 marching snare and ended up separating the ring about 3/4th's the way around the shell, sanding off the old glue, then re-gluing and clamping the ring. It worked fine, the drum sounds amazing. Good luck,

Regards
