Rare Sonor strainer, part 2: the repair.

Loading...

Thanks to the helpful responses in a previous thread, I decided to attempt a repair of the busted strainer/throwoff on my old Sonor snare. The first attempt failed, as the adhesive couldn't withstand the stress of having the snare wire engaged. So I used a different adhesive made especially for plastics (the housing of the throwoff is a plastic cylinder).

In case this may be helpful to anyone, I thought I'd document the repair.

Here is a pic of the damaged strainer (the housing is broken on the underside):

I disassembled the mechanism, removed the gasket underneath it (HT to Oddball for pointing out this didn't belong there), and did my best to glue the housing back together. Anyone making a similar repair needs to use an adhesive for plastic. Your local hobby shop or hardware store will have plenty. You'll see here that the housing was in bad shape, and even missing a chunk:

I let the glue cure overnight, and then started reassembling (HT to Buckie B for some assistance here). First, there is a thin backplate that needs to be inserted:

The next pic is the heart of the throwoff/strainer. Buckie is right-simplicity is beauty. Reassembly was easy, although I had to use some tweezers to hold the hex nut in place as I screwed the tension knob into it.

I readjusted the wires so that there isn't too much pressure against the housing when engaged (this was the problem in my first repair attempt), and I'm using other tension adjustment screw if I need to tighten the wires. Here is the repaired strainer with the cap:

Will she hold? I'm not sure whether the adhesive will give way over time. We'll see. But things seem to be working just fine. I'll keep my eye out for a replacement, though.

Thanks again for your suggestions and help. I hope this post will be of some use to others.

That was Henk that pointed that out. He`s a member here but is on the other SONOR site more. I merely passed it on to you. He is a SONOR collector.

Looks good. Hope it holds long enough. For touch-ups on the plastic, maybe chrome nail polish to hide the glue. I used it on some exterior car screws and it`s still there.

Well, thanks for passing on the info, Oddball. I would not have known about the superfluous gasket otherwise.

It's nice to have a normal sounding snare again.
