Radio King Floor Tom Rehab

I finally found a WMP Radio King floor tom I could afford and the clean up has begun. It looks like it spent many years as a heavy smoker as it had almost turned white marine brown. So far I have cleaned it and polished with Novus 3 and then 2. In some ways it's a shame to clean away all that history (possibly built up in smokey bars over the years) but i need it to match my kit.

The nickel hardware is next when i get back home in a couple of weeks. Can't wait to add it to my kit and it appears to be about the right era as the bass, snare and 12" tom that originally came together. The bottom hoop in the first photo (from seller) is engraved but has the holes rather than clips so maybe slightly later production? The top hoop is a later sticksaver and will end up on the bottom until something more appropriate shows up.

Great Job!!

Ammonia based glass cleaner works well for smoke residue. No reason to leave that on covering up the wonderful WMP. Single flange clip rims could be ordered for quite awhile after double flange came out.

If you have cleaned many a nickle plated lug ignore. I like to nylon brush scrub with glass cleaner. Then use aluminum mag wheel polish with lots of micro-fibre towels. Towel lugs with rubbing alchol and then wax.

Thanks for the pics and hope it goes well.

Andrew congrats!! I know you've been looking for a while for this one. Nice job on the cleanup so far too! Going to be a beauty. Can't wait to see it finished and the family photo!

Well I finished the clean up of the floor tom and I'm very happy with the way it matches the other drums. I now have the option of two floor toms in the set up but in reality I'll likely only use the 16". It took a while to find a suitable FT at a price that wouldn't send me broke. I still need a correct bottom hoop and the muffler is missing the padded part but that will have to wait. At least the bottom hoop is a Slingerland and is nickel plated.

I do have correct clamp on spurs for the bass but I forgot to put them on for the photos

thanks John. Yep, definitely keepers. I have a lot into them for a start and nobody here in NZ would pay what they are worth to me. They are also the coolest set I own.

Nice work Andrew. You can always add a 18" or 20" floor tom next. :):)

thanks Glenn. I just put the extra 14" in the photo because it looks good. I'm not a 2 floor tom guy though. 4 would probably make my head explode:) And I'd never fit them all in my car.
