"out-of-round" question

Loading...

Just picked up a 1972 gold sparkle Ludwig Club Date set in descent condition except that the 14x14 had the bottom head & rim removed obviously for a long, long time and the bottom side looks more like a football. No way a head & rim will go back on.

I've never tried to fix this before, so if anyone has tips, instructions, ideas, experiences, etc. please let me know...

Thanks!

Any idea how far up the drum the ovalling extends? And is this a rering drum?I have to wonder if you suspended the out of round end over a steam source, making it "bendy",and then put a 14" triple flange rim on and let it dry out slowly, would it go back to round-like conform to the rim shape?Or even put a head on it and put some tension to it.Any takers?

You could *try" soaking the out of round part in water for a few hours, then putting some weight on it to force it back into shape as a it dries. Worth a shot if you cant use it now.

Any tips on how to dry the shell out? Heat gun? Plain solar heat? What about the water damage implications? does a shell got water damage when is exposed for too long on the water?

Pipe clamp across the widest points. Slowly adjust over a period of weeks until it's round or close to round, pop a new head on it, it might need some coaxing but it can be done. Just don't rush it.

I did this with my Premier BD, worked out great.

I took my "out of round" Club Date hoop to a drum company (Ayotte)

They did it professionally. Much better than messing around myself.

When in doubt let an expert do it.
