"Mint"? 1964 Star kit value

Got a lead about a kit a few towns over. The guy describing them is selling them for someone else so he wasn't knowledgeable about drums. First tried to tell me they were USA made, I asked if they were definitely "Stars" He was sure they were so I told him to try to send me some pics tonight. 4 piece, bass, tom FT and snare. All gold sparkle and as he says perfect condition. He said his bandmate purchased the from an elderly gent who was the original owner, He said they still have the original heads. They were apparently stored away and had newspapers inside from the early sixties. My question is, if they are in fact in "mint" condition 1964, what is a good price to offer him. I'll put up the pics when he sends them, thanks Rich.

Based on what you say, i,d start by telling him they are MIJ drums and are priced accordingly. If it were me, i,d start at 250 and see the reaction...providing what you,ve been told is truthful.

Hit like you mean it!!

I agree...tell him MIJ isn't anything special..

Let him think about it first (do this in person / not over the phone)

But show him the japan label...NOT USA..!

****Start**** at $100 /..

He'l get a lil ****ed....Then he'll come back With $300..ish..

Flat out refuse...until He comes down..to the 200/range..and u win..!

Kit should be worth $400/500 max..depending on drums / snare.? hardware..etc..

I did sell a 67 STAR 5piece MINT kit with ALL hardware& snare about 3yrs ago for $400..

It amazes me what these drum sell for. I bought a new MIJ kit in 1965...my first real drum kit....it was just over $300. That's about $1700 in todays dollars. So....a mint MIJ drum kit should easily command over $1000 .....you would think....going by what it would have cost new back in the day......no?

No, Gary. Thats not really how MIJ drums are priced.

Basically, the general condition, the wrap color , the thickness of the shells, and the overall quality level determine the price. The range is from about 100 to 500 dollars, the 500 being for a REALLY hard to find wrap color.

Most MIJ sets fall into the 200-300 range since so Many sets are Blue or Red sparkle. Those arent worth very much. Also, the early 60s sets made with the really thin Luan wood dont bring much, you can crush one of those shells in one hand. Drop it and its done.
