"Frozen" p-85

Hi all, I have a 70's Black Beauty, and I've found that I cannot move the throw lever. It's like it is locked in place. Normally, I'd just get a new throw, but this drum was formerly owned by a good friend and known drummer who is no longer with us.

What should I look for and/or lubricate when I take the throw off? What tends to lock up on these?

I have had good luck just shooting some 3 in 1 oil in there!

wd40 and work it back and forth some after it as soaked a bit has worked for me.

i bet 3 in 1 oil would be great too.

I agree with Blair and Mike...Spray some penetrating oil, let it sit for a couple of minutes and try working it back and forth until it starts to free up...It will probably take a few applications, but it should loosen up...If spraying it with oil doesn`t work, you may have to soak it in a bowl with oil and let it sit overnight...

Over time, metal moving parts just tend to bind up without regular maintenence applied to them...

If the other suggestions of 3in1 & wd40 don't do the trick, liquid wrench has never failed me for unbinding and lubricating stuck metal.

Good luck!

after working on old cars for quite some time I have two products I use to loosen up old metal.

Deep Creep and PB Blaster, if you can remove the throw off from the shell, soak it in either of those products for a while.

One more lubricant that works wonders.......Mopar Rust penetrant spray, available at any Chrysler Jeep or Dodge dealer, and GM heatstove penetrant spray, available at any GM dealer. Both are basically the same and are worlds better than the best commercially available penetrant/lubricant, PB blast, they truly work the fastest and the best.

All the previous contributors offer excellent suggestions. What I would ad is that you remove the strainer from the shell first. Not difficult at all to do. Once you see the mechanism from behind, you'll see how simple it is and should be able to tell just what the problem is. As a very last resort, you can always install another P-85 and hold onto the original for safe keeping.

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions! Gonna try the 3 in 1 first, then move up to more serious stuff if that doesn't do the trick.
