"Count Me In" drum documentary on Netflix

Hi guys,

I'm surprised no one has mentioned this yet. A 2021 documentary-of-sorts on the origins of rock drumming. "Count Me In" on Netflicks, directed and produced by Mark Lo. 1 1/2 hours long- it's worth it.

Interviews with: Stephen Perkins, Nicko McBrain, Samantha Maloney, Emily Dolan Davies, Roger Taylor, Stewart Copeland, Chad Smith, Cindy Blackman Santana, Jim Keltner, Clem Burke, Abe Laboriel Jr., Nick Mason, Bob Henrit, Ben Thatcher, Nick "Topper" Headon, Ian Paice, Taylor Hawkins, Jess Bowen, Ross Garfield, Rat Scabies and Andy Gray.

I must be old, because I hadn't heard of most of them! And there was a lot of vintage film of the famous rock bands in concert...including some I'd never heard of. It was an enjoyable presentation, but if the repeated use of the F-bomb irritates you, you may wanna pass on it.

I enjoyed it. The intended audience is really non drummers, but that's OK. Anything that inspires people, younger people in particular, to pick up the sticks is OK in my book. There were several people that I hadn't heard of either, but not that many really. While there were plenty of well known drummers that weren't even mentioned, I thought the drummers represented a pretty good cross section of ages, styles and genders.

I must be numb to the F bomb, I don't remember that being a big part of it. Too many watches of the Big Lebowski I guess...

I enjoyed the film even though I had never heard of several of the drummers or even heard any of their records. The five drummers who were the most influential to my drumming were hardly mentioned if mentioned at all. The film focused heavily on the soloing chops of the drummers who were interviewed. My influences were all the consummate time-keepers who propelled their respective bands in the right direction. Each of them might have been capable of playing solos. But, they kept solid time and played occasional flourishes that have been glommed by most other drummers. Those five giants of drumming are/were Ringo Starr, Charlie Watts, Hal Blaine, Earl Palmer, Al Jackson junior.

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.

It was definitely an eclectic bunch of drummers who have "been there/done that"...some fun stuff...I enjoy Cindy Blackman. Worth a viewing for sure.

I agree with O-Lugs about the good use of time to watch this film.

I just saw it and I enjoyed it. The styles represented are outside my listening universe, but it seemed balanced between progressive, metal and punk from the 60's through the current era. I sometimes cringe when I hear of a movie or a documentary about drumming because is usually told through the eyes of the director or producer and not the musicians.

I'm still a little unsure of the message this one is shooting for, but it's worth the watch.

My favorite part was the drum circle footage. Would love to sit around and jam like that. Gonna have to move that up on my retirement bucket list.
