Question regarding plies of 3-ply drums

Loading...

Is there a standard way of listing the woods of a 3-ply drum? You know, when someone says, "maple/poplar/mahogany", is it assumed that they mean "interior/middle/exterior" or "exterior/middle/interior"? Or, is it left for ambiguity, and works both ways, like the whole "12x8 tom" vs "8x12 tom" thing?

I can usually figure it out from the drum being wrapped or not, but there are exceptions galore out there. Just wondering if there was a standardized way of describing the ply make-up. Thanks!

inner/middle/exter, start from the inside and go out.

Sounds good! Let's all get on the same page about this, and we can be the change we want to see in vintage drum nomenclature!

Unfortunately, there is no standard. Take a weekend and peruse the various cats and history books. It has been a very open field. The same company will contridict itself within different cats. It is what it is. Just another fun on a bun quirk of vintage drumming.

Funny that I never thought of it before, but I always mean, 'interior/middle/exterior' when describing plies. I just kind of assumed we were all on the same page. I don't mind agreeing to a local standard so that at least we can all understand each other when we communicate regarding ply lay-ups.

Too many great drums to list here!

Great point. Okay, from now on, everyone will describe their kits from the outside in. The important thing is consistency. Everyone has to do it, or it will continue to be as ambiguous as it is now. Let's set the norm, right here, right now!

I've got a silver sparkle mahogany/poplar/maple Ludwig drum. BAM!!! That's how it's done, kids...
