Question from an old Noob Last viewed: 4 days ago

From AZBill

Me too, on the Sling set. (Wonder what Rogers snare is included.) The Crown kit is very nice-looking, but the $$, meh.B

The snaare is a Rogers Luxor from around 1964-65

Thanks to all for the opinions!

Now for the final question...the other choice would be a new set of Gretch Energy. They are a complete set with decent Sabial cymbals (ride, crash and hat). I can buy them for $600 out the door.

Opinions on new vs. the Slingers?

Slingers all the way, you can't beat that price he is asking for the Slingerlands.

PS, I agree with the post by Purdie Shuffle. that is what i wanted to say but couldn't spit it out without sounding like i didn't know what i was talking about. you would be much happier with the Slingerlands and Rogers snare.

Why pay twice the price for a low-end (entry level) kit made out of poplar, than for a vintage professional level set of drums with known quality and sound characteristics?

The Slingerlands w/the Rogers snare is -hands down- the better kit. Especially price-wise/bang for the buck. In 6 months, you won't be able to get $200 for a used, 'Made in Asia' entry-level Gretsch 'Energy' kit. The Slingy's are a better build and already worth much more than is being asked for them.

It's a no-brainer.

Another vote for the Slingerlands. Don't pay $600 for those Gretschs. They are not good drums.

Good luck.

The Slingerlands would be a better choice than either of your other two options.

For the asking price, and the kit being offered, you can't go wrong.

Should you decide to pass on this offer, PM me as I'd certainly swoop on it!

WOW! Thanks for all the thoughtful replies and great advise.

It looks like I'm goin' to be bangin' on some old Slingerlands.

I truly appreciate your input and look forward to participating here.

Gee, what made you go with the Slingys?

Just kidding, welcome to our place here. Go get them drums and clean them up. I also took a long break from drumming, just got back into it two years ago. It has been a ton of fun playing again and this new hobbie of restoring old drums is just what I needed. I love it here, you will to. Hope to see ya around!

My preference would be the Crown - but preference aside, you HAVE TO buy the Slingers simply for the tremendous value. If you can stomach the color, you will be "well-geared" with it and have more money left for good cymbals.

BTW - you need to consider the size of the drums - if the Crown is 20in (BD) and the Slinger is a 22 - and if you are a short guy and that matters.......just saying. I really don't care for 22s anymore.

AAAAHHHH BUMMER - just read that the Crown is a 22 - and the Slinger has a crack in the wrap - and it's really 400 for it with the snare.....With my preferences, I would personally keep shopping.

This is collectible as it is rare to see so many lugs on each drum!

Welcome back into the drumworld!

I had a great day! Instead of sleeping in and wasting the day, I got up at 8 and I had all my slacking done by noon!

That's not a half bad set of MIJ's! If the shells had re-rings, I'd be tempted to buy them myself! Love the wrap.
