Question for vintage Perl guys

Was wondering if any of you Pearl experts can answer a question just out of sheer curiosity.. Saw a vintage Pearl Wood Fiberglass kit for sale for really cheap. The new version Pearl came out with last year is a different shell composition, and i was wondering if the vintage ones had their last ply in wood or was it fiberglass ? The reason i ask is that if i ever see one that i would potentially buy, i would remove the wrap and stain the wood finish, if it had a really nice grain, kinda like the new ones. These kits are powerful but still warm, and because of the fiberglass ply, would make an excellent gigging kit. All one has to do to give it a modern look would be to replace the spurs with modern Pearl ones, ISS mount for toms, and wood hoops for kick , and you've got yourself a really awesome sounding vintage kit with vintage shells, but with a slightly modern look to it...Any thoughts are appreciated. Here's the kit in question.

Why would you want to buy a vintage set, tear off the wrap, refinish it, drill some new holes for spurs (new spurs do not fit the hole pattern on mine), and buy ISS mounts? You are still going to have the tom mounts or holes on the bass and the mounts or mount holes on the rack toms. I doubt the vintage shells are going to sound any better than the new ones. If you want to have modern looking drums buy some new drums. Add up the money for parts, time and supplies that it would take to do that. Sounds like a lot of work for a compromise... and would you really still have a 'vintage' kit after you have you've stripped and drilled it? I'd say 'bad idea.'

Go over the the USA side of the forum and ask those fellas if you should do the same with some 70's Luddies, Slingys, etc... LoLoLoLo

The outer shell was fairly ordinary "Bland" looking timber... The inner coating was the fibreglass... (talking 70's W/F kits).

Cheers

Yup ,and the wrap was held on by a single strip of double sided tape.

A very easy recover.

Here is a link to a kit that will be clear coated. Wrap was gone when bought them. Outer is birch but with knot holes which I like. Can't see ever having a problem with the original hardware so it stays.

The chances of finding a wood grain underneath the finish that can be made to look good are low. If it's luan: that's very hard to make look good. In any other case, there will most likely be nuts and other ugly parts in the wood, because the drums were planned to be wrapped and appearance of the wood was never an issue.

You could, however invest in some veneer.

I don't see any reason for re-placing hardware. I've seen kits like those and the hardware is sturdy enough for a gigging drummer I'd say.

If you're planning on really replacing hardware, I tend to go with Tris' opinion. If your plans are keeping them intact, but only change the finish (either being lucky and be able to use the current wood, or use veneer), I'd say go for it and make something unique.
