Everything seems ok to me.....not sure what your issue is.....the rounded B/O badge didn't come out until 1979 and by then the drums were 6-ply drums with a clear maple interior. Granitone on a 3-ply with re-rings and pointy B/O badge would be correct for 1972-1976.......:confused::confused:

Thanks, that was my question. I was not sure about the timeline on the pointy vs rounded corners...kind of my "which came first". That was all I was looking for.

My Deluxe Classic kit has clear maple 3-ply shells. The floor tom is the only wrapped drum in the kit to have a serial number and it dates to 1976 -which, as I understand it, was the last year of production for 3-ply shells. I added the pointy badge Supra later on and it has a serial number that dates it to 1979 -which was the last year of production for the pointy badges.

I am not sure what the timeline is for Granitone interiors with 3-ply shells. I know the Standards had Granitone interiors and were 3-ply and they ran from something like 1968 until 1972 -I think. But, as far as the Classic line.....I'm not sure.

It's all rather confusing, isn't it?

It's confusing because Ludwig didn't suddenly start with the Granitone and then go to the 6 ply. I have seen Granitones that appear earlier than clear interior maple three ply shelled drums, and definitely have seen pointy badge 6 ply shells.. the 70s is one of the least-consistent decades for Ludwig, period. But those drums look consistent. That appears to be a champagne sparkle color. Too bad the floor tom doesn't match.. However if the seller sits on them long enough maybe they will realize the price is out of range with reality. Some people who don't know the market very well price stuff high to begin with so they don't get ripped off out of ignorance. BTW I think that range, '72-'76 is a bit wide for Granitones, but as I said there is some overlap, the whole seventies era is like a giant transitional period. And you can't use the catalogs to determine dates, because there was airbrushing new badges, and old badges still on pictures left in catalogs, and sections of the catalog that are simply reprinted from previous catalogs, and of course the catalogs are printed well in advance of the year they're made for, and the factory changes come about way before the catalog is released, so there are variations. I'm sure everyone would rest easier to have an "expert" state stuff started and ended exactly on a certain day and I'm probably going to get flack for this but, in the end, you just have to deal with it on an individual basis, and live with the fact that some things may never be known.

That's a great post, Pounder. I agree with you 100%.
