Psychedelic Blue Ludwig Set

Loading...

Hey guys!

I bought an old ludwig drum set (22, 16, 13, 12 and a snare) with a very cool psychedelic blue wavy finish. The shell material inside is a grayish-white, and I can't quite recognize it. Can anyone date or recognize their shell material?

Is is possible to get a rough estimate what they're worth?

Thanks,

Danni

I believe the inside stuff is called "granitone" basically, it's a paint. There is most likely 3 ply classic shells underneath. Maple-Poplar-Maple.

It's just a classics set that was made with less expensive hardware to make it cheaper to sell. I'll bet it sounds awesome!!

Cool  Luddy Standards in a Blue Astro finish - Groovy babybaby crawl2

Granitone interiors (speckled) - '68 to '72 era, from what I understand

- I saw one of these running for almost $900, but I don't know if that's a fair value or not.

In mint condition with absolutely not a scratch and complete with hardware, it might be worth $900 in the current market. Of course, "value" is a funny thing. I rather find the true value to be in the fact that those are real vintage drums that you couldn't get a custom drum maker, today, to build you properly no matter how much money you were willing to spend. The machines and techniques used to make your Standard drums don't exist anymore. I think the value as a drum set is really high, but as a collectible, it's not that great.

Astro finishes tend to scratch VERY easily, by the way. That makes finding one in mint condition very rare.

Thanks for the information, guys!

They do scratch easily, but even a bit scratched they still look fantastic.

Oh, yeah! Those are gorgeous! From the looks of the hoops, they seem to be drums that have lived an indoor life. What kind of shape is the tom mount in?

I gotta say, from the full pic, they look like the Charcoal Astros - not the blue.

I thought that when you just showed the Standard badge pic - but thought it just coulda been the lighting. Blue is much lighter. - - In the attached VDF pic Blue is left Charcoal is right. Niiice kit either way.
