Protecting Old Shell Covering?

Loading...

I am restoring a vintage Vespe combo drum. The shell covering is paper-thin plastic and has some cracking and is very brittle. I am wondering if there is any way to apply some sort of coating to the drum to prevent, or at least slow down, the cracking, and so the drum can at least be use able without doing any additional damage to the finish. Any ideas?

Thanks!

Hi, Chris!

I certainly am no expert but, I can tell you what I've learned. The lead guitar player in my little band recently asked what the best polish he could use to protect his very expensive guitars. The owner of a very established music store with whom he is a friend basically repied, " Never mind the high priced waxes and preservatives, use Pledge from time to time." He also said that it was a good way to add a bit of polish and moisturizer to old coverings on drums. I tried it. I agree. About once every two months, I apply Pledge with a soft clean cloth. It really cleans and preserves. There must be ways of filling in cracks with resins but, you'd have to go to a specialist for that info. I hope this helps a bit.
